importing from NY across lewiston
Anyone know what will be acceptable, insurance wise, at NY DMV in order to get an in-transit tag?
Thanks,
Stu

I remember a couple of years back that a memeber here was looking into it and that if both the seller and buyer go to the NY DMV, that a temp tag can be obtained. Ithink you need to have a very co-opertive seller to go thru all the hassle to do this.
Search the NY DMV or call them to be sure. As much as advice on this forum is good - you should always do your own researh and be 100% sure of the rules to avoid surprizes...

i showed them the title, my driver's licence and a letter from my insurance provider showing vin # and proof of coverage. i think the fee was $15-20 for a 30 day temp tag(permit).
this allowed me to cross at Lewiston and to get the necessary inspections for an Ontario licence plate/registration.
hope this helps. good luck.

Car is home.
I'm in the middle of the RIV process now.
Getting the car across the border was quite easy and getting the in-transit tags was just as vetfever said.
The tag was $12.50
US customs is serious about the 72 hour thing.
Canadian Customs can get quite aggressive in determining the value of the car. I saw a car with a bill of sale that customs was questioning. They went online and saw the car listed for alot more than the bill of sale.
And make sure you get a bill of sale - even if it is a private sale.
Overall, easy, IF you do your homework.
