Default Windshield repair/replace in Calgary????

Well, it finally happened........

Cruising up the 22 just south of Cochrane, a 1 ton Dodge kicked up a relatively large piece of gravel which smacked into my windshield, right at eye level even with the steering wheel(of course). It appears to be what the glass industry calls a "combination crack".

I've done some research which indicates that chips/cracks in the driver's "field of view" are not repairable. Is that correct? If so, what does a new windshield cost? ANd where would you guys recommend I take the car to get it done????

This really isn't a big deal, but after the week I just had, it's the straw that broke the camel's back, ffs..........

Its crazy around Calgary. I have had so many cracked windshields over the years i gave up replacing them
Luckily my Vette has not suffered one yet.

I hear they can be pricey for the newer Vettes

I heard the prices are not too bad, unless it is a GS, I guess they are upwards of $10,000..

I heard that because the GS is so wide it's affected the whole structural integrity of the vehicle and so the windshield is specially constructed to add extra rigidity to the frame. Not only is the windshield super expensive (as Tony rightly pointed out) but the new windshield has to be "matched" to the vehicle frame which entails a total strip-down of exterior body panels and all interior components. The entire replacement process takes approximately 3 months of steady work and costs upwards of $50K.

And that's down in the US. Remeber to add that Canadian Premium tax, duty and what not. Plus I think UPS does all the shipping for the GS windshields. Realisticaly, probably closer to $75k.

Poor Paul, everybody's picking on him.

Actually, I have the solution, newest windshield technology, unbreakable, installed, for only $10K . . .

UPS only?Guaranteed that it will show up broken. You will need to order at least five to get one you can use,add an additional $40k and at least three months wait, just to get a stone chip the day after installation and start over again.

Try 5 Star Auto Glass at 46th Ave & Macleod Trail - East side, near the Back Alley. I've used them a few times, and while I haven't had to replace the w/s in my C5, I wouldn't hesitate to have them do it. Excellent pricing as well.

Quick update for all you wise guys..........

I was able to get the crack repaired, but it's not perfect. To be fair, the tech wasn't sure how it would turn out, and was hesitant to even try because the combination cracks generally don't repair very well- this was confirmed by several shops.

It'll do for now, and I was much happier to pay $40 instead of the $1400 to $1600 I was quoted(from several shops) for a new windshield.

You're not biased by chance??? Post your price for a C6 front windshield and then WE'LL tell you if it's the best.
