Default Rememberence Day.

Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a silent moment of remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace. We honour those who fought for Canada in the First World War (1914-1918), the Second World War (1939-1945), and the Korean War (1950-1953), as well as those who have served since then. More than 1,500,000 Canadians have served our country in this way, and more than 100,000 have died. They gave their lives and their futures so that we may live in peace.
Remembering our American brothers and sisters also.
Smokey.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I remember my Grandfather and his brother.

Alexander Kirkwood and Sam Kirkwood.

Alex was a signalman in WW I. His job was to scurry up the trenches, and the "no man's land" laying out telegraph line as he went, and morse code back enemy movements/situation reports.

Once, he peeked over the trenches, just two inches, and caught a bullet in his forehead, just under the helmet.

He was shipped back to England, and had a metal plate put in his head. Us grandkids were amazed how he could make a small magnet stick to his head.

He taught me morse code, and lived to 78 years. My mother told me he loathed war so much that he put all his medals out in the trash.

Sam Kirkwood died at age 19 in the trenches.

My dad joined the Navy in 1943 as a gunner age 15!...served from 43-52, he as well did not like war and hardly spoke of it all those years.

My father was the first person in Norfolk county (Port Rowan, Ont) to enlist (1939) age 18. He was shot in the leg in Scisily in 1943. He never talked about the war and we never brought it up. He passed away this year Oct.21/09 just two weeks short of his 89th birthday. I took his medals to the service today and I will be there next year and the following years with his medals. We salute you dad.
