I have been a member of this forum for years. Once in a while there seems to be a thread (usually on the cdn forum) that talks about Police. The topic is most times about how a member of this forum received a ticket, and they don't think it's right. In some instance the Police are picked on with comments like "shouldn't they be catching real criminals", or "I was only going with the flow of traffic".
I have read these threads for probably 5 years or so, and generally keep quiet, because it's not worth getting into an arguement with someone who has no clue about Policing.
The latest incident hit home really hard, because it happened in my home town, and the two officers are friends. Remember these officers might be the same officers that gave you a speeding ticket. We all have a job to do! Just because you received a ticket from a Police Officer, it truly doesnt mean they are out to get you, or that they are bad people.
In saying this, there are alot of forum members that are pro-police, but then there are a few that don't seem Police friendly. It turns out that this is the 3rd Police shooting in as many months.
I agree and i dont agree, rick last month i got a ticket, officer has no mercy or understanding the situation, got 76/50 km, usually car speed will be 5-10 km over the speed limit right? than it was dark and down hill, for a split sec my car roll to 76 may be less than a block officer saw this and took the advantage and no mercy or warning, he was behind me in a undercover cop car, so i told officer u were behind me and u know that i was not speeding but for less than block car sped up to 76 on a down hill.
$122 bucks thats bull, literally a bull, we should have a law like america, a cops car should be visible atleast 500 fts, crap here they came right behind your azz.
And these 2 cops got stabbed, but u guys shot and killed him, so whats the fuss about? i dont get it, i understand he attacked them first, but u guys should have shot him in leg, hands ....not like many shots till this sucker died.
Conclusion:
1> Some bad cops, some good cops
2> Some bad people, some good ...
Police are no different than any other group.....
Except that most of us dont have the cajones to do that job.
there is the odd A**hole in any group.
Lord knows I have received lots of tickets......one today actually:
........but i always treat them with respect and try to make sure they know I am not one of the a**holes they have to deal with every day.
today the OPP officer that lasered me at 139 on the 404 only wrote it at 115. He said he appreciated how I pulled the car way off the road to give him some room to work and put my window down(tint) right away.....he said not many people do that.....
another OPP story. Friend going to Mosport Friday to work as instructor. Gets pulled over........tag is expired (june birthday). then he finds out his drivers license is expired........... Now the cop cant let him drive. They park his car at a lot in Pickering and the officer drives him to the track!!! so he wont be late for work......
Cops getting killed on the job is terrible for sure and I think our town police have a very hard job but...... the OPP that patrol the highways spend there days driving up and down the highways handing out speeding tickets because there isn't a whole lot more for them to do and that's not sour grapes that's just reality. I have many friends who are local cops that will say the same thing. In northern Ontario the police are mainly there to hand out the speed tax and wait for the next drug dealer to put his car in the ditch.

Ricky when I heard that on the news I just about had a heart attack and listened to the whole story through. Glad to hear you are OK. As for your friends, sorry to hear. Last I heard the one officer was in surgery but no idea if it was life threatening or not etc.
Sami, I am quick to bash but usually Fantino. The cop that wrote up the 50 over for the fire chief is probably some punk who thinks he is making a name for himself but will soon quickly learn his back up will be less than stellar when it is needed in future but one thing for sure is that if a guys with a knife attacks a cop and slashes them, then in my opinion drop him. end of story. As many have said already there are good and bad everywhere in every profession no matter what but thankfully I can honestly say I have come across a far better stretch of amazing cops than I have the occassional prick. When you do that is what the courts are for.
We have bad days too Ricky so in the mean time roll safe buddy.

Lotsa great police out there
Similar story, just moved up north and forgot to renew my license. Got pulled over for speeding, but found out my license was expired. Officer made sure my car was parked in a safe place, and gave me a ride to work..
Most Leos I've ever met have been honest to goodness real people.. Even shared a few beer with a few..
Like with any niche though a few can spoil the perception of the whole. There are some who make poor judgement in giving traffic tickets. That's for sure. Go to court and you realize again that the court system does not want to listen...they just pretend.
Guilty on the ticket means automatically guilty in court...I have seen a few times.

It sounds like you were speeding, and you are probably fighting the ticket.
Sami police officers are not trained to shot someone in the leg or hand.
It's true, there are some bad corvette driver's, and then there are some good corvette drivers. If you speed, then you really have to pick your spots.
Are you sure about the 500ft law in the USA? Sounds like an urban legend!
In reading these posts it reminds me of the ol performance appraisal senerio. While sitting there getting your review rather then hear about all the good points during your last review, all you hear are the bad points. In other words, they usually remember your mistakes rather then your accomplishment. Have you ever been there?

Retired from Policing in 1986. You getting tickets that you may or may not have deserved has very little to do with two Police Officers being stabbed and seriously injured by what appears to be a mentally deranged man . To suggest they should have aimed for his hands or legs would probably have been the Officers choice too in a perfect world. However they are trained to shoot for the torso which is the largest part of the target. Having made the decision to draw your firearm, reality teaches that often you may only have one shot and you should make it count before you become the victim. There never is a happy ending to a tragedy like this. Sorry to sound like I'm lecturing a Forum member. Still have many friends doing that job.

I have no disrespect to police officers at all, I've never had one problem with them. I do my best not to give them a reason to pull me over and so far nothing. not hard to drive courteously with turn signals, no snap lane changes, stopping at stop signs/lights. I drive about 100km a day here and there and usually see at least one police officer and get no problems even with my loud exhaust (which I wanna quiet down/ have it more noise on demand).
That being said in the states coming back from Indiana one officer pulled me over and ticketed me which I wasn't to happy about. Passing a truck maybe a bit faster than I should but I dont like being next to 18 wheelers. gives me a ticket for 88/70. $150 USD. My bet is he saw the Ontario plates + canadian flags I had on the car for the trip and figured I wouldnt fight it... but whatever was my fault too.
Rick and others, i have no disrespect to officers, infact i pay a small money towards police funds every year.
My only thing some officers bad too, u gotta accept that and cant blame ordinary citizen, becasue we dont know thier side story, even in this case i dont know exact reason why this man stabbed officers, there gotta be some reason, well officers shot and killed this man so whats the fuss about? i dont get it.
Officers job always risky, thats why u been trained for and u all know before u join this profession, so accept u will be facing lot of bad guys in your lifetime, atleast u toronto cops are luckier than those some bad azz US cities, its just crazy over there sometimes its a hell for officers there.
Iam pissed off because officer did not cut me a slack, i was not speeding but car sped up less than block when i went downhill and infact i slowed down, he took the advantage of it and ticketed me.
Even though i fight this ticket i still pay some for sure, as police and court are same department and i guess they have to make money in summer time..lol, from now on no more police fund.
I'm a lurker but I can't leave this alone. We have a police officer who initiates a thread by stating that the Barrie shooting really hits home hard and we have responses that complain about speeding tickets. Rick puts his feelings on the line and the response is yea, yea, BUT. There are no buts here...two officers who would much rather be cruising in Corvettes are confronted by a nut with a knife and are left with no alternative but to re-act the way they were trained to do. The shooting will be part of their memories for the rest of their lives. Let's hope for a quick and healthy recovery. Keep up the good work, Rick. Peter (b&b mufflers)

I think the responses regarding speeding tickets are related to Rick's comments about the animosity towards traffic cops and somehow appearing to relate that to the dangers of policing. I don't think there is a link between the two.
Yes, policing is dangerous, that is well known by those that choose that profession. And yes, there is animosity to the police force who, in terms of public visibility, appear to spend much of their time catching "speeders" on North America's safest highways and enforcing such Charter infringing laws such as HTA 172.
As you may know, recently there have been charges laid against an OPP officer for allegedly fabricating HTA 172 charges against drivers. I don't care if that is "a few bad apples", the fact that over 10 000 drivers have been charged with this Charter breaking law and it is the police force who perform the activities.
And no, saying it's just their job doesn't cut it. They are enforcing a law that infringes not only on the general publics Charter, but ironically also their own. We let our politicians and ultimately those that enforce these dumb laws get away with it (which indeed points to the apathy of society today).
And before everybody gets in a knot about me voicing my personal displeasures, policing is VERY close to home for me to. My brother just graduated and started with the Toronto Police Service. He's been on the road for about 7 weeks now and just 2 days ago an officer he graduated with was killed in the line of duty. The officer was 31 with a wife and kids of his own. My brother is the same age with a wife and 3 young kids as well. I hope I never have to experience what Rick, or my brother just experienced regarding police in the line of duty.

Thanks Peter for your thoughts, and of course, very professional and sincere.
I guess I shouldnt of expected anything less when I started this thread.
On a positive note: Would you be interested in attending this, and taking the C6 threw some cones?
