Is there duty on used wheels crossing the border??
Just curious if the charge duty on a set of used rims when you bring them across the border. I have a set of polished gumbys on there way from Florida to CBI in Niagara falls NY. I will be going to pick them up this week and bring them back across the border. Anyone knowwhat can I expect to pay when I bring them across??
Thanks
Location: Mississauga, Ontario I know all the answers it's the questions I don't understand
Whatever value the seller puts on the wheels you will pay Prov and GST taxes plus brokerage fees if shipped by FedEx UPS etc. It is a ripoff but you are a Canadian so you are already used to getting ripped off evertime you do anything

Waht proof do you need for the agreed price??? will they accept verbal? Can I use an email which states transaction?
Thanks
I bought a set of used wheels off a US forum member and had them shipped to buffalo. When I brought them back across all I had for proof was a print out of the Private messages where we discussed selling price, they accepted that.

If you used PayPal bring a copy of the payment made also! Deduct any shipping fees as they are not taxable, " YET" !
If you bring them across yourself then you are acting as your own broker therefore they waive the brokerage fees.
Actually Canada Customs NEVER charges brokerage fee's. Only brokers ie. Kuhne & Nagel, Livingston, UPS etc. charge this fee. Duty for items you bring back from the US rarely have duty attached to them, unless the officer see's the item and it is clearly marked made in CHINA at which point you may be assessed the harmonized rate for the item.
Not true - they charge tax on the shipping as well - in other words they tax the full cost of what it took for you to get those goods to CBI.
well. kinda, the last few times I had stuff shipped to the border and picked it up at UPS or wherever, when I presented the bills at customs, they charged me taxes on the entire amout including shipping - when I questioned and protested, they said they just look at the bottom line on the invoice, plus the fact that the shipping is value added !!!....

I also protested and got a more formal answer:
"Tax is payable on the total cost of getting the merchandise to the point of purchase, which includes the cost of the goods plus the cost of getting them there"
If u are lucky like me than u will be waived, brought 1300 worth of goodies, auto parts to home goodies, have bills and reciepts and everything, lady officer was good enough to say you have good day sir, have a safe drive. I said thank you and bye.

I have had that happen as well - total luck of the draw....
I've never paid tax on shipping charges when bringing in parts from the U.S.. Everytime, the customs agent has actually told me that the don't tax shipping charges. Ohh well, guess I'm lucky over here in MB.
I picked up my 3 piece 19" wheels and tires from the u.s a while back. I typed up a reciept for $200 bucks and made up a signature. Paid $30 in taxes and smiled all the way home.
