The head of the Ontario Provincial Police says drivers who crash in bad weather because of their own negligence should have to pay the bill.
Commissioner Julian Fantino will propose absolute liability legislation today under the Highway Traffic Act to hold irresponsible drivers accountable.
This essentially means making drivers pay for accidents in which they were driving aggressively in poor weather, not insurance companies
Fantino says at least 40 per cent of crashes are caused because people are going too fast in poor conditions and not paying attention.
He says his proposal targets people "who could care less" about how they are driving when the roads are bad.
Fantino says his proposal mirrors laws currently on the books in almost every state in the U.S.
Geeze... Where did they dig up this moron? He obviously hasn't seen the ball since the kickoff. Did people actually elect this guy or was he appointed?

...
although my stats are a few years out of date, fantino should address the 1800 or so single vehicle accidents opp officers were involved in back in (2004 or 2005...can't remember)
and, last I remembered, their speedos are "certified" and their drivers are "trained"....
we are crying that the automakers are going bankrupt and thousands may lose their jobs
YET,
we still villify car ownership?!!!!!
I just don't get it.

And how exactly will he figure that the driver was going to fast????
Not quite Adolf but if you wanna see a good Adolf send me a PM and I'll send you Adolf ..ps you must understand English soccer and the players like Man United Scouse Alec Ferguson etc......
Back to the post ..was this fella voted in by the popular vote or is he nominated by some group?
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE DRIVE 50KPH OVER THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT IN BAD WEATHER AND AIM THEIR SEMI IN THIS IDIOTS DIRECTION BEFORE ANOTHER RETARDED THOUGHT ENTERS HIS HEAD ....not that he has ever contributed a good thought but what do you expect, afterall he is an idiot...
While we are in vent mode, you'll be happy to know that his partner in crime McSquinty has just told the beer companies they may no longer sell beer for a buck a bottle because it isn't socially responsible. He's actually dictating a minimum price they must sell their product for.
Thanks again to all the idiots that voted Liberal.
Open to flames I know....however, for once Dalton made the right decision and stated that there will be no changes to the Highway Traffic act.
This "wish" of Fantino's has way too many flaws that would have far reaching implications. For example:
1. Insurance companies - allow them too much power as well as affect the Canadian economy.
2. Mandatory Insurance - why would you need it? That is the whole purpose of insurance - to cover you for accidents. Currently the only time you are potentially not covered is if you are charged with Careless or Dangerous Driving or a whole other host of serious Criminal charges already well documented in the Highway Traffic Act.
2. Give Police Services even more "subjective" power, (right in Fantino's own statement was the word "subjective").
Continued rebuttal from our legislature indicate that unless Fantino becomes an elected official and not an appointed one, this will not go anywhere.
Granted he got the over 50 law through, however, he did have prior support from elected officials. This one I believe came out of the blue (no pun intented)....
There are much more effective ways to prevent a majority of the accidents that happen in our Winters:
1. Better driving instruction - mandatory driving lessons that cover all seasons before you are granted your full license - both on the street and in a safe area where you can learn to control your vehicle in potentially dangerous situations.
2. More effective snow removal on our streets. I still can't understand the use of salt vs. sand. Growing up in different snow belt areas, sand is always used - not as pretty when it melts, yet much more effective as temps fluctuate (very limited slickness) and a lot better for the environment.
I won't go the mandatory snow tire route although I am a believer in them, especially for non AWD or 4WD vehicles. They make a world of difference. No more would you get stuck behind a car with "all seasons" haha, or nearly bald tires trying to make it up a very slight incline or just get through an intersection. Or those driving 10-20km in fear of spinnng out.
Ok..I'm done. Well not really, but figured it was long enough
if there are so many great drivers out there why all the accidents? Even though I believe something must be done this may be overboard. I believe the use of salt should be banned, forcing people to drive on hard packed roads, like it used to be,,,,,,,,,plus it is better for us snowmobilers,

hey there is no snow removal here, and the use of salt is virtually non-existant,and guess what, life goes on.You peeps in the east need to chill out relax, maybe take a snow day or 2,.
