All you hydraulic and solid flat tappet guys should be using an oil with a high ZDDP content, or oil plus a ZDDP additive. You run the risk of losing a cam lobe(s), I did and it trashed my old engine! Diesel oil used to have an appropriate amount of ZDDP in it, but I think even that might have changed.
I am now running a roller cam, so I am not too worried about it anymore. I am thinking about switching to full synthetic 5w50.
They put fresh Mobil 1 in the day I bought it in late September, but may switch over to Pennzoil Platinum this spring.Any filter preferences?
My oops! Altho I have a C6, I mistakenly answered a C3 post.

Reason: info wrong
have been running 5w50 synth for a few years although did not get the vette out even once this past year. When I get around to freshening up with a cam change will go back to dino oil for the break in then likely back to 5w40 or 50 synth.

I use the NAPA Nascar Select oil filters on my cars, they are very reasonably priced ($5 for my wife's Civic, and around $7 for my C5) and well built filters.

Hey Pat, what's a good quality 5w50 synthetic oil?

If I'm not mistaken, these filters are made by Wix and you can't get much better than that.
I use 10-30 synthetic in my C-3 but it's a roller.
I use Pennzoil 20W/50 racing oil, second highest rated in ZDDP. I believe Quaker State Q racing is the highest with Rotella T at 3rd highest. Most diesel oil's are rated high in ZDDP also.
I tear down my engine every winter and no signs of camshaft / lifter wear with the Pennzoil racing oil yet and I'm sure there are others who have good results with other oil brands

does Canadian Tire carry the Pennzoil racing oil? or where do you get it?

There really isn't a lot of selection when it comes to that viscosity, as not everyone makes it anymore. Mobil 1 and Castrol both have a 5w50, and I know Quaker State used to sell one also but I haven't seen that in a while. Pennzoil also used to make a 5w50 synthetic, but I believe they stopped that also.
If it were me I'd go with the Castrol 5w50, but that's because I'm really not a big fan of Mobil 1 products. I haven't seen that many oil analysis reports with 5w50 oils since it's not a viscosity recommended by any new car makers, but I have seen a couple of reports with Castrol 5w50 over the years and it's shown to be a good oil. It does thin out to a 5w40 but then again most 5w50s will, as that's quite a large viscosity spread and it uses a much larger amount of viscosity index improvers to acheive it.

I'll give the Castrol synthetic 5w50 a try; thanks.

I get mine at NAPA, I've also seen it at our local Parts Source store, which is a spinoff of CTC. From NAPA a pay $34.00 + tax for a case of 12 for the Pennzoil Racing. Hope this helps.
