so factoring in the difference in the dollar, is RIV now making it easier to bring a vette back? Are the bumper restrictions gone now, and the need to take it to canadian tire?

bumper modifications are not required anymore, thats been quite a while now, as of around mid spring its not required. I brought mine up april 08 and got screwed about three weeks later law was changed
still need to have mechanical inspection, and the federal inspection at canadian tire. Its a joke though, he didnt even look at my car. Asked if thats it in the parking lot said yes and he said alright, stamp, stamp, photocopy, gimme your money, goodbye
even doing the bumper modifications im still well ahead by buying last spring with the canadian dollar at $1.02 when i traded to the roughly 80 cents getting now.
Doenst seem like much but 40000 quickly turns to 52000 and BOTH taxes, not on the 40 but on the 52
While the bumper requirements are now harmonized, there may stilll be a requirement for an anti-theft immobilizer. I have not checked into this recently. Last time I checked was in the summer.

Now with the doller being where it is.. MIght save a little cash on the right priced car... But not alot... Also if you intend on driving it back during the winter, you gotta pray for decent weather...my vette wouldnt make it down the street its so low.

I don't think RIV has really changed anything in the last year or so, but with the $$ the way it is, and both taxes... might be cheaper here now.... especially if you buy private, then only 1 tax....
Nothing has changed on this side of the border, just less volume so paperwork may get done quicker. If you get lucky and find the right distress sale you may find a good deal, but not likely enough to make up for the exchange rate.It seems the further away you go,the better the prices get.
I bought a U.S. car back in July when the Can$ was almost at par
Current exchange negates the savings almost to zero. About the only advantage is that you have a wider selection of cars in the U.S.
One last thing, daytime running lights work automatically on Vettes BUT can be defeated by manually turning them off using the light control stalk. If you get the wrong guy inspecting your car at Can Tire (as I did) your car may not pass the RIV inspection without getting the DRL's modified. My guy noted this fact but then let me off when I promised the car was not imported for resale purposes...
This is just a warning - not likely to happen - I came pretty close - but somewhere in Canada soimeone will be the first to get caught on this technicality and then have to take their car to a dealer who won't know how to fix this issue....
Thanks god i bought mine when Can $= almost USD. But good news is vette's getting much cheaper n cheaper n cheaper in US specially C5 prices are really at the bottom.

Some are Sami but I have been looking for another C5 Z06 and I can tell you the prices are not that great at all. With the exchange rate now it is actually cheaper to buy here or worst case par.
I have been watching U.S. prices like a hawk and c5 asking prices are holding steady. Some c5 Z06 with 50k miles have come down in price but most of the movement in the last 2 to 3 weeks have been in the C6 market. 2007 models are 28-30k with low mileage which still makes them 7-10k cheaper than the asking prices in Canada. Does anyone agree with me or is my figuring wrong?
With the dollar the way it is, depending on what you get the US car for it might not be worth the hassle to import one here to Canada.
Nevermind the costs just to get the car here, but what about any travel expenses, hotel stays, food etc. all that eats into what savings you may gain to go get a car and bring it back.
If you shop around locally you can find some decent deals on a new 08 car, perhaps even some new 09's.
After the dollar tanked I decided to go this route and found my new 427 LE here locally and got a wicked deal on it. I would have been happy with a regular new Z, but getting a new LE for the price I paid for it was the icing on the cake.
