The Corvette Plant is shutting down December 24th and will not fire back up until Monday February 23rd…the 1st car off the line for the calendar year 2009 will not be until Thursday February 26th. We shared some intel with you a while ago about how when the plant goes back online they would be building 80 cars a day as per 150-170 a day and that will be the new standard number. That would put an estimated total annual production number in the upper teens, an output GM has not had to deal with since 1970. (1997 was under 10,000 but that was a new launch and a half a year run)
ZR1 total numbers for this year….To launch the new ZR1, the world expected 2000 units(1500 for U.S. sales)….with cutbacks and cutbacks in production we doubt we’ll see 1000 or so worldwide units produced for 2009. When asked about 2010 ZR1, (unofficially) we were told…” We’re not sure if there will be a ZR1 next year” said an un-named source.
Of course, we are all familiar with the law of supply and demand. It will be interesting to see if the enthusiasm for purchasing a 2009 / 2010 Corvette drops to the same level of production. And what will the drop in production do the resale value of our C5's & C6's?? Hopefully, they will hold their value better than they have!!
