What I am looking for mainly the process. I have some friends who have imported bikes, but not cars. Is there a recall issue with the car, switching daytime running lights, speedo and odometer, what changes have to be made to the car, process at the border. Any advice would be greatful.

Thanks
Car will have daytime running lights already. New wording on the riv site concerning daytime running lights might present a problem,
Quote:
Most U.S. GM vehicles except the Chevrolet
Aveo, Pontiac Vibe and Saturn Astra may be
equipped with a switch that can turn off the
daytime running lamps while the vehicle is in
motion. In Canada, daytime running lamps are
required to be permanently on once the
vehicle is in motion. The daytime running lamp
control system of your vehicle may need to be
reprogrammed to neutralize the switch that
permits turning the daytime running lamps off.
so far I have heard no word on anyone having to modify them so they cannot be switched off.
Your car will have a switch that will change all MPH and odometer to metric, so no problems there. You will need a seatbelt tether bolt. Canadian Tire sells them for about $7, just leave it in the package and set on seat then return it for refund after inspection. You will need a form of recall letter. You can pay $250 a get it from Vintage Services or get a VISS printout form GM and submit it, and 9 out of 10 times they are being accepted. Search through this section, you will see lots of threads on these subjects that might answer more of your questions. If you need even more answers, ask away.
Any advice on permits. The car is located in NY state. The owner has offered to help get the car over the border. I was thinking of getting an Ontario temp permit once the car was at the border. Any tips?
I think you will find that C6 Z06's already have a seatbelt tether installed. It is under a plastic flip up plate about ten inches behind the passenger seat and two inches from the wheel well housing on the trunk floor. Regular C6 verts and coupes don't have it but the Z06 does. My 07 does and it is a US car. You should be good to go with no modifications required.
Mike - any reason you had the car shipped to a dealership? Was this to avoid paying a broker to import the car for you?
I did this for many reasons:
It is so easy to do the paperwork and import yourself, there is no reason to have a broker and shell out some cash;
Dropping to a dealership avoids the need to have an appointment with the truck driver. You rest assured that the car will be safe while you get there;
I asked the dealer to inspect the car and do whatever is needed. He added air in the tires, changes the oil and the filter. Total cost: $70 canadian.
When I drove to the border to deliver my original documents (required for Alexandria Bridge and Champlain crossings in the state of New York only, for the others a fax copy will do), I also dropped by the dealership and opened the work order at the same time.
Not sure if that'll work since the car doesn't 'exist' in the MTO system. I think you need to get a permit stateside.
That is correct. You can not get an Ontario permit until it is fully imported and cleared by RIV. You can get a trip permit in NY and drive with that. Make sure you have the car insured. Your insurance company will insure the car for you on your trip prior to it passing importation.
Bought the car today - hope to pick it up in a weeks time. 2006 VY, 2LZ, Nav and polished wheels with only 500 miles on it. In fact, it is documented as the last Z06 made in 2006. Can't wait to bring it home. Thanks all for the advice.
