OT: Should Toyota fix cracked windshield under warranty?
My wife cracked the windshield of our 06 Sienna this morning while scraping off some ice. Admits she was scraping hard, but not as much as one would after a freezing rain storm or something.
Anyway Newmarket Toyota said it's not covered, even though I have the big-money ECP package. Web site says glass not covered, but in my opinion this is normal use and a windshield shouldn't break when you scrape it.
Quote is $650 for aftermarket or $850 for Toyota. However I'm sure I can find a better deal elsewhere. I haven't tried the insurance guys yet, but I truly feel it's a defect not an accident.
Worth the effort to fight with Toyota? Work with insurance instead? Or am I pretty much toast here??? Help I need this van back fast.

if they don't however, I have a great guy that will come to where ever your car is and fix it for probably much cheaper than Toyota's price, and faster. PM me if you need his company's info.
(He fixed my Rav 4 windshield that I cracked it by carrying my 8 foot ladder in.) Took about an hour, been a year since and no problems.

You laugh... but that's what the service guy said. I guess that is a point. But it was the first cold night of the season.
When I was younger, I actually used to pour hot tap water to clean the windshield on my car until one day someone saw me and told me how easily it could crack.
Another thing to remember when scraping the ice, is not to go too close to the rubber seals, plastric trims and painted surfaces. They chip very easy.
BTW, not laughing at the damage on your van. Just wondering how much force did she ACTUALLY use. I thought windshields are supposed to be very tough

When the ice is thick after some freezing rain, I always use hot tap water and have never had a problem. Beats spending an hour with the scraper.
My first mod ( ) to any daily drivers is a remote starter. I have used Canadian Tire (Pro Starter) and WalMart (Bulldog) ones. I lilke the Bulldog's for the ease of installation and working range.
Usually sells for 50-70 bucks for an automatic transmission and installs in about 3-4 hours. Start the vehicle 5 minutes before you come out and it's nice and warm. Set the heater to "defrost" the night before and the ice usually is soft enough to use the 'rubber' side of the scrapper
From an 'insurance guy's perspective' just get it replaced with your company...most likely the ded will be waived depending on your amount.
As for why Toyota doesn't replace it...there's a strong chance that there was a small chip on the windshield, and with the extra 'force' that was used to scrape the windshield it caused the chip to turn into a crack. Unless you can prove that there were no chips and it was caused by a faulty orginal installation, it's a battle you aren't going to win.
Sorry Desi but I have to disagree..minimum information isn't going to get a part replaced that's specifically excluded. Unless it can be proven it was an inherent defect and not the result of 'scraping really hard' or a prior stone chip, just go to a glass shop and get it replaced.
I would fight it...but that's me...i like fighting for things...while our house was being built the owner of the company called my wife at work one morning about something and told her that the sales person, site foreman and woman that does all the upgrades said i was difficult to deal with....
Say you turned on the van and used the heater to melt the ice, when you went to get into the car you saw the windshield was cracked. Deny that you scraped the ice on it at all.
