Email received this morning from RIV EMAIL THE POLITICIANS NOW
Dear Sir,
Thank you for your inquiry.
At the moment, we are waiting to hear back from Transport Canada regarding the importability of your vehicle.
We understand that there has been some ambiguity regarding the List of Admissible Vehicles from the United States, as it is subject to revision without notification. We request however at this time that you remain patient while we wait for the involved parties to provide definitive answers regarding these issues. We are expecting a resolution within the next few days. As soon as it is released to the press, it will be posted on our website www.riv.ca. We recommend that you monitor our website during the week for an update.
In the meantime, please forward any comments you have regarding the vehicles’ admissibility to the original equipment manufacturer.
Theft immobilizers are a red hearing. GM is the only manufacturer who has banned the importation of all of their '08 vehicles by a Canadian citizen. The only two cars they will allow are called the Astra and Aveo???
They banned all Corvettes and the XLR, even if they were built before the supposed Sept 1st immobilizer deadline. The Corvettes and XLR are the GM models where the price delta was the greatest between Canada and the US.
I have contacted my sister who is a senior official with the federal justice department in Ottawa, she was very interested. She suggested that I also contact my MP in the interim.
I have left a message for the writer of the story at the Globe, as the source of his information is from the manufacturers and is not accurate. Hopefully he will call back.
ALL 2008 Corvettes manufactured for US and Canadian consumption HAVE immobilizers as STANDARD equipment.
Check www.chevrolet.com. Look up Corvette, standard equipment, and interior. It is right there in black and white and that is the US website.

Go and read the list RIV provides already. GM is not the only one so get over it.
With all due respect to you my fellow Corvette lover, please show me another manufacturer who has blocked their entire '08 product lineup from importation? All '08 Fords are allowed, all '08 Chryslers are allowed, all Hyundais etc... Yes some Hondas and Toyotas blocked (also wrong), but it is GM Canada who is attempting to set this dangerous precedent! If we do not speak out against them and and let them get away with it, the others will probably follow.

Well, let's see:
Alfa Romeo
Fiat
Ford/Mercury/Lincoln (all after Sept. 1 without immobilizer)
Hyundai (all built after Sept. 1)
Lotus
Mercedes-Benz (won't say)
Peugeot
Porsche
Renault
Suzuki
That is straight off the RIV document. Were you too lazy to read it?
Porsche has not specifically blocked it. They just don't say.
Some of the others have not had cars in NA for a very long time and are not even admissible to the US so how can they come from the US to Canada.
GM is a big player and they did make an explicit move for us lowly Canadians. Heck, they build the cars in Canada, ship them to the US and than don't admit them back. That's a rather unique distinction don't you think?
Digital Z is right in a way, the RIV revised the list today and it now shows that '08 Fords must have an immobilizer, and 08 Hyundai's are no longer admissible? This is the first time that I see a car(s) that was approved be removed from the list? I hope no one got stuck with a car that they had already bought?
There is also a new text by the RIV saying that you can add an immobilizer to a car that doesn't have one? Not sure if I quite understand how exactly this works regarding the list?
All GM's remain inadmissible, even our beloved Vettes (regardless of build date) and even though they all have immobilizers as standard equipment. Thanks again to CanadaGrant for that info.
I had quite a long conversation this afternoon with Greg Keenan, the reporter with the Globe and Mail who had written the article referred to above by jdp600 http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...tory/Business/
I will write another post later giving a more detailed account of our conversation, but he was surprised to hear that not all the information given to him by the manufacturers was accurate. He plans to look into the issue further
