Default How best to ship parts from the states?

I am possibly looking at picking up a tranny from the US. Who has shipped these things and how? Pennsylvania to western Canada, what do you recommend?

I've had a few parts shipped here and no matter who you use, it's always pricey.

Commercial I guess. It is an ebay seller with a lot of Corvette and F body parts including used Ls1 and Lt1 engines. Add just says shipping by truck freight. Is a stripped tranny too heavy to UPS or Fedex?

u should have bought from our forum member pete k, PA, ebay trannies are the worst, i blewed 3 in just barely 3 months, than i requested pete k to built one for me, man i swear that was the best tranny (700r4) with all hard parts and transgo shift kit, i said wow. Drove that car for 17k miles than sold to a forum member and he is beating too.

Goodluck with ebay tranny. Ur best bet be fedex first than ups. The transmission should secured on pallet than put it in a box, if u r buying TC than ship it separately. If u r buying from mad dog lou even his godfather could not handle 500 lbs of torque and tored.

Dont let that tranny shipped without pallet, shoot me an email i will send u a pic of my tranny that ups damaged it pretty bad by the time i recieved it. sami7241969@yahoo.com

Thanks Sami. No I am buying a new 6 speed with one year warranty. They won't ship to Canada even though they use UPS for their small stuff. Tranny weighs 135lbs but crated the thing weighs close to 200lbs so UPS will not take it. The 50lb increase means Fed Ex who want $750 US for the same thing

Somebody must be shipping these heavy parts across the border. How?

Here's a suggestion...

I bought a set off new tires from DiscountTireDirect.com for the track a couple months ago. It was about $300. (I'm new to autocross/tracking so I just bought some performance street tires). I had them ship it to a UPS store in Buffalo. I drove down there, picked up the tires and threw them in the back of my minivan. I drove back across the border. The girl there asked me if I bought anything, and I told her about the tires. Told her they were $300, and she just let me go. I didn't pay any taxes or anything.

If I had shipped directly to my home here in Canada, UPS would kill me on brokerage fees, and I'd get nailed by taxes as well.

I'm not sure why I was able to not pay any tax on the tires, but even if I was taxed, I'd save on the brokerage fees.

Plus I made a road trip out of it with my g/f.

Oh yeah. The UPS store that I went to only charged $5 per package to hold it there. Doesn't matter how big the package was. They'd hold it for a week too.

Use frieghtquote.com and they will get you a much better rate than that! I just shipped a complete 302 chev and m21 tranny from Wisconsin to Toronto to $450. Good luck, Mark

Thanks Mark. Did you have to use a customs broker or did you clear it yourself?

Anything over $60 it has to go through broker, and when i used to live in atlanta, GA, i sent Cyl heads to rick in toronto, i sent as gift with no value on it through UPS, i mentioned as used auto part with no oil residue or grease or gas, its dry and used part that iam sending as gift to my canadian friend, Rick recieved with no extra payments or any brokerage fee. The only thing was, if part could get damaged or lost we will be loser, thats why i said do a good packing and dont make any mistake while shipping. just sharing my past exp. Good luck.

The people at Frieghtquote.com set me up with A & A customs brokers and they emailed me all of the forms and handled the transaction. They were excellent also as was the company that actually brought me the skid - Vitrans Transport. I would use all of them again in a heartbeat!

Yes I just got the "quick quote" back from Freightquote.com. Looks like under $300 plus any brokerage fee. Wow
