Default NEW US purchase vs. Canadian?

US dealer willing to sell me a brand new LT1 base coupe MN6, not a premium color (msrp $45025USD):

$39000USDx5%(dealer buys,pays state tax,sells to me used)=$40950USD
$40950 x 7% (~ usd-cnd conversion) - ~$43800CND
$43800CNDx6% (gst)= $46400
$46400 + $250 (riv, etc) + $1000 (bumper mods-still unsure if this needs to be done) + $400 (flight) + $400 (fuel/hotel getting home) + my time-free because it would be fun:=
grand total= $48400

OR

best base coupe MN6 price in Canada I've seen (LT3), no premium paint (msrp $70065cnd):

$59999 the one mentioned in this forum at Addisonx(6% gst)=$63600
$63600 in Ontario and get home to Alberta ~$1000 (freight) =
grand total = $64600

Net difference is $16K giving up LT3 options. I don't care either way about having LT3 options. Not sure what LT3 options worth over LT1

Comments? Frank

Not so bad, but if you find a US broker, used car dealer, or leasing company to buy it for you, you won't have to pay the US sales tax, only a fee of probably a few hundred.
Even better again, if you can find a broker or dealer etc... that is also licensed in Canada, he can sell it to you in Canada after he buys it in the states, and you can do an accommodation sale for a tax credit on your used car.
I think I found a guy here in Montreal that can do it, unfortunately he is on vacation for a few weeks.

Sounds worthwhile to me. You could even re-sell it for a decent profit.

Main issue I guess is whether or not they honour warranty at your local dealer (I'm sure that's been discussed here). But even if they don't you got $16K to take care of your own problems. Worst case if it turned out to be a problem car, you probably wouldn't get any love from your local dealer. But you could just sell at a profit and get another!

If you show the figures to your local dealer, maybe they'd cut you a break instead of sending you to the US. Doubt they'd match it but they might sell at dealer invoice just to move a unit. But even if they meet you half-way it's still $8K.

I say go for it. Stick it to the Cdn dealers. You don't owe them nuthin.

Sounds like you've already done the homework, price negotiation, planning, etc. Now go pick it up

If the dollar stays at current rate, I will be even buying daily drivers in the US. I like to spend my money wisely.
