Seems my noisy lifter(s) getting worse and louder, on my '02 vert, people other than me can hear it now, I have extended warranty, so should be no problem, other than perhaps someone recommending a dealer that's had experience taking a few engines apart. My local one says they should be able to handle it, but haven't had any engines apart yet, I talked to a tech there who hinted that they talked a few people out of the idea of fixing theirs, convincing them it was ok and not bad enough. Any one have a similar problem fixed satisfactorily?
Before you take it in anywhere, have you considered trying a different oil? I'm assuming you probably use Mobil 1, and I know that a lot of people with all types of engines have noticed that Mobil 1 gives them more valvetrain noise than other oils. This also shows up when you view oil analysis reports with Mobil 1, as that oil tends to show higher iron numbers too, indicating more valvetrain wear.
So try a different oil first and see if that helps. Amsoil 5w30 has been known to make a big difference in quieting down a lot of people's noisy LS1s, so has Redline 5w30.

Take it to another Dealer, get it fixed under warranty. If a dealer tries to talk you out of a repair it would be becasue GM wont pay enough to make it worth their while. For all you know you could have a broken piston, or a bad bearing.
Exactly what I was thinking! I was just wondering which is the best dealer with experience taking these engines apart - I'd hate to have it go back together worse than it was before....

This is probably the stupidest thing you could do.........
Mask the problem and let the warranty run out before the engine blows up! not good advice.
Ive had an engine builder suggest that one, I didn't buy it then and I'm suing him for damages now.
I have heard that other oils will change or reduce or even eliminate the lifter noise, but it's usually only temporary. I feel that it should be repaired under warranty, and shouldn't happen when using the maunfacturer's specified oil grades and quality, especially the same brand as factory fill. I just wonder who a good dealer is that's had these engines apart a few times for similar or more serious problems, and has fixed them properly with no further issues.....
Sometimes the wrong mechanic can create night mares down the road.. I see it regualarly in my own heavy truck shop.....

I'm not suggesting he do it if there is an actual problem, what I'm suggesting is that there isn't an actual problem with the engine at all, but that he simply is using the wrong oil to begin with.
I know this will ruffle a lot of feathers on here, but Mobil 1 is really not a very good oil at all. It has gotten even worse over the last few years. With many types of engines, not just LSx based ones, this oil has given a lot of people greif because of louder valvetrain noise, and higher valvetrain wear in their oil analysis reports.
So I'm not suggesting that he try to "mask" any problem here at all. I'm simply suggesting that he might not have a problem at all, he might just be hearing the typical LSx engine noise, but amplified a few times over thanks to the crappy valvetrain protection that Mobil 1 provides.
By the way, I never give bad advice, and don't appreciate being accused as such....
Hey Patman, I understand exactly what you're saying here about better oil qualities available, but this noise is getting worse, starting from only when cold started (dissappeared when warmed up) to being constant. My oill sampling shows no signs of excessive wear btw...I think I'll try phoning a few other dealers to see if any of them give me a warm and fuzzy feeling of comfort about letting them take my engine apart, and try to get it fixed before the warranty expires.... I only have about 6 k's left on my GMPP.....
I had a guy walk up to me in the parking lot of the mall one day cause he could hear my noisy lifter and said he had the same problem - even asked if I was using Mobile 1, I said yes, and he said he changed to Syntec on his Camaro and had better luck, and got rid of his valve train noise....

As air temp goes up in the summer, the oil will thin out which could explain the more noise its making recently. Who do you deal with in Hamilton? It is pretty simple to pull the heads and swap lifters, they should be able to do it. I am wondering if they checked for bent pushrods?

I agree Patman, and also I like the thicker oil in the summer, it will help the engines reliabilty...

I agree with PATMAN on this 100%-mobil 1 5w30 is JUNK!!!! It breaks down too easily-gets sucked through the pcv and fills your intake with oil-which later builds up on your pistons whcih in turn leads to detonation.
A good way to test this is to but on a simple catchan-drive the car around and see how much oil collects. Then on your next oil change-swap to a different brand-I swapped over to crappy tire oil-and the oil being caught in the catchcan was half as much.
PATMAN can verify this-Mobil re-formulated there oils a while back, and since then there 5w30 has been awful. Ask Patman what he prefers or for a better replacement-it's worth a try before tearing it apart.
Boys Boys - why can't we all just get along!
Oh, and theynever did anything about the lifter noise btw, they said it wasn't serious enough - no more W.N. for me - left the car there a week with a list, and basically none of it was done...
Oh, and I'm switching oil brands too, as per Patman's recommendation....
What kind of noise is it making? Is it like a 'tick', 'tick', 'tick'..... I had that happen on my LS1 SS a couple weeks after I bought it. I ended up taking the top end of the motor apart and found the problem. It had two bent pushrods. I ended up fixing the problem for under $100 bucks, thank goodness!! I would also go over to ls1tech, and do a search. There are lot's of guys over there that know there stuff!! Good luck!
