Hey guys, I'm new to the vette scene and I'm thinking about buying a vette from the states and importing it back to canada to save some $$$$. I just have a few question that maybe someone thats brought one across can answer. I already searched the forums and firgured out paper work portion of it so my questions are about the car it self.
1. Did you guys have to change the speedometer to km/h?
2. Does the HUD also shows km/h?
3. Lastly do the Canadian models display the heat temp controls in Fahrenheit (°F) or Celsius (°C)

Well, if your talking about a C5, all you need to do is push the English/Metric button and it will convert back and forth from miles/kilometeres celcius/farenheit etc!
Sorry i forgot to mention the year... i'm think about a 99 or 00 C5.
So correct me if im wrong.
You can toogle back and forth between km/h and mp/h on HUD of both Canadian and american models of a C5?
And you can toogle back and forth on the heat controls from celius to farienhiet?
also if any one can find that post by the member that did the speedometer guage conversion that would be awesome. I tried searching for it but i couldnt find it.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE TITLE FAXED TO THE BOARDER CROSSING 72 HOURS BEFORE. You can't bring it across the boarder untill EXACTLY 72 hours later. I got stuck for a few hours at the bridge.
You'll pay GST at Canada customs on the sale price of the vehicle, also you 'll need to pay $209 to enter into the RIV program
Call GM Canada at 1-888-467-6853 and have a Recall Notice from GM for Federal inspection I think its $25.
Once the car is in Canada you have 45 days to complete an E-test, Safety, and have all the recalls done. Basicaly once the Vette is in Canada its just like registering any other car in Canada. Nothing needs to be modified on for the Vettes the bumpers meet all specs. http://www.riv.ca/english/US_vehicle_admissibility.pdf
When you hit the English/Metric switch, it switches all digital gages at the same time. HVAC included. The speedo needle adjusts to the 0-200 scale. That will work; the only thing is that you will not be able to see your speed when you drive above 200 kmh. In Canada, the scale goes from 0-300.
If you want to have your speedo converted, look at this link. Technicentre is the service centre authorized by ACDelco and General Motors. They provide a very good service. I had them work on my C4 cluster.

If you're interested , I just brought a 99 FRC back so all the work is done
See the Canadian For Sale section on Pg 9 .
Don't want that , then how bout a 63 SWC ( LOL )
I found out you must change the bumpers to meet CDN standards, and if it's new (2006C6z06, ie) you cannot get dealer service till 12,000km or 6 months.
Or you must flatbed (drive, if it is driveable) the car to the States on your own expense to fix the car before the above terms are met. (aka Buffalo)
YIKEEEES!
Found out about these details exploring importing a new c6z06.
Can you buy, license and insure in the U.S. and drive in Canada
To avoid the grief and save the GST tax, is it possible to buy, license and insure in the U.S., thinking specifically about people who may do the wintering in Florida thing and would have a U.S. address for at least part of the year.
Florida state tax is about the same as here in Ontarion but you would save the GST plus the $12,600 Cdn price difference. As for warranty, I would imagine that U.S. licensed cars are always eligible for warranty if travelling here in Canada.
The plan would then be to drive back the U.S. licensed Vette to Canada for the rest of the time?
Location: Oakville, Ontario Corvettes were built to be driven...not trailered
Bob, last I checked, US insurance companies need to verify a US income source (is US tax return) AND a permanent US address. I have a friend who has his car licensed/insured out of Houston but the car is in his brother's name who has a business down there.
Mind you I have not fully investigated this, I'm just going on what he told me. Any body else have any first hand experience with this concept?
Location: Oakville ON "Real Corvettes have folding tops..."
While this is none of my business I believe that to be legal and in good standing with insurers residence rules would apply. Simply moving from province to provice requires by law changing registration in 30 days from my experience. If one has permanent US residence this may work. I would be cautious if something were to go wrong perhaps there would be reasons for insurance coverage to be denied.

with everyone above but your oil pressure and Water temp will be show in °F on the instrument cluster plus your will only go to 200 unlilke 300 on the Canadian version.
What about license plates? I think I can just produce a bill of sale for my insurance and they will add the coverage to the car. I can't get plates for it though, without the import status completed. Do you get some kind of a transit plate? Do you just slap a spare plate on and take your chances? I am in Alberta so the no registration fine is only $50 or so. No insurance is $2500 here so you need that pink card for sure.
Policies in Ontario have a "newly acquired vehicle clause". Covers you for 14 days from the date of purchase. It does not have to be an actual transfer or ownership a bill is enough. Policies in your province may have the same clause....ask your broker or insurance company.
The license plate or temp. plate is a different problem. If it was here you would be able to get a temp. plate by producing the ownership (while still in the other persons name).
FWIW my vette came with the original California plates...so plating wasn't an issue.

I brought a 92 back from Memphis, it was cheaper than buying one here even after paying the GST. There are several things that must be done to import a car to canada. Private message me if you want to know and I will tell you what is involved. Its not that hard but if you do not do it right your car will be held at the boarder and that would be a pain.
I think this should be a sticky.
I see importing threads about once a month in the Canadian section.
1. Find the car you want to buy.
2. Make sure it can be brought into Canada. ( or can be changed to Canadain specs, may involve changing bumbers, child restraint, spedo stickers ect.) Check the RIV web site for the list.
3. Send away for the recall letter from the manufacture, you must have this to cross the border.
4. Make sure car has the manufacture lable on the door or door post with the build date and weight. If not you must send away for a letter from manufacture.
5. Call your Ins co and get Ins on the car.
6. Get trip permit... in state you buy car. was $5.00 in TN
7. Be sure fax title to US customs 72 hours before you get to the border and to stop at US customs and have them stamp your title.
Have your bill of sale and Ins slip.
8. Stop at canada customs, they will fill out RIV forms, pay GST. It is best to pay the RIV fee at the border, saves mailing it in. You only have so much time to get the car inspected and passed. If it is not done in time or fails twice it will have to be exported back to the states.
9. Get car home and get it ready to go the Canadain Tire for its RIV inspection, It must have everything that a car that was built for Canada that year has. Example.. third brake light, daytime running lights ect.
10. Once it has passed you will need an etest and your safty slip and your RIV paperwork and also the paperwork from Canada customs that shows you paid the GSTand then its off to get your plates. A short time later you will get a new sticker for the door from the RIV.
I think I covered all that must be done, if not let me know.
You do not have to change the spedo, if it is electric you just switch it to metric, if not you put stickers on it.
