Default I need some schoolin' on DVD burners!

One of my xmas presents was a DVD burner, and I would like to learn some info. Not about the burner, but about all the different formats of blank DVD's. Why are there so friggin many???? My burner is capable of burning:

DVD-R
DVD-R (dual layer)
DVD-RW
DVD+R
DVD+R (dual layer)
DVD+RW
CD-R
CD-RW

So whats the deal with these? What software is the best for burning DVDs? I have been using Nero for CDs, and I also got for xmas Nero 7 Ultra Edition which can burn DVDs.

www.videohelp.com

Has a ton of information about authoring, buring, converting, formats etc etc etc.

Site can be a little tedious to navigate sometimes because there is a lot of links going to different places but has a ton of information.

Hey Bruce

My burner will do all formats also, I buy what ever is on sale. You will have to experiment to see what works on your home stand alone DVD player. Most new players will play both formats (+/-). But some of the older machine will only play one or the other. Your computer will play and burn all formats.

The dual layer are for long movies 3 to 4 hours or if you don't want to compress the movie you can use dual layer but they are still a bit pricey.

The RW disc can be erased and reused, good for short term storage, watch a movie once and erase.

Nero is good software for burning, buy a couple RW discs and play with it.

P.S. When you are burning video only burn at half the disc capacity. eg 8x disc burn at 4 times speed.

This site may be helpful

depending on what you're burning, just go w/h the safe route...dvd-r and cd-r if you need a small amount of data stored....As for movies, even a dvd9 can be compressed to fit a normal 4.7gb dvd and retain quality...just depends on if you know how to use the software!
I've found different manuf. of discs also need to be looked at, as some are basically crap. I stick w/h the Verbatim data life brand and I've never had a problem w/h data retrieval. Ridata also made some really good batches a couple years ago, but I haven't used them in a while...
As for burning at low speeds, I agree with this for sensitive data like movies and games (xbox,ps2 backups etc). I can burn at 8x (dvd) and have no problems if the source disc can handle it(verbatims can) but I will have problems if that disc goes into an older dvd player...reading becomes an issue so stay w/h the slower speeds of 4x to burn movies. What's 15min's!!! Hell to compress movies for backup it takes me 3hrs to render...usually done while I sleep, but still it's worth it...I'll never play any of my dvd's again...everything is on my server and can be set to play in seconds..well that's another story...btw, what burner did you get??

I don't know if this has been covered Bruce, but alot of Movies are Write Protected. In other words can't be copied with conventional programs...do you understand what I mean?

Thanks for the info and links guys.

I will buy just a couple of -R and +R blank dvds and experiment to see what plays on my dvd players.

I got a Pioneer DVD burner.

I have had varying results with different brands of blank cd-r's, so I tend to stick to the name brands, which is what I will do with the dvd-r's also.

I know some dvds are copy protected, but there are ways around that!

Just get DVD -R and burn on a slower speed than the highest speed so you don't make coasters. Movies can be decoded and burned on your own blank DVD's, you need two different s/w programs to dothis

I've purchased a number of blank DVD's (mostly DvD-R) that have worked out fine...
