What are you putting in it? What numbers are you expecting?

Mine was great!

Early Santa delivered LT1 with the 144 B&M supercharger and now a complete MSD system.

Congrats Glenn, I'm anxious to see your motor this summer.

Heads:
Dart Pro 1 230cc 2.08in 1.625ex
Block:
383 stroker with 6" H-beam rods, 11:1 forged pistons
Cam:
Those are 1.7 ratio rockers in the pic above so you can be sure the cam will be mild
Intake:
Edelbrock Vic Jr
Holley 850 dp
Ignition:
MSD 6AL

I have the intake, carb, ignition, and recently the rockers. I'll be getting the cam and lifters around Feb. the heads hopefully spring, the rotating assembly fall, and the machine work/assembly done in the winter.
I suspect the motor will make ~230HP and 265TQ

Why not build a 406 Alex? It will actually cost less because besides the normal stuff, no additional machine work will be neccessary. Actually, I guess you have to factor in the cost of a 400 block to that, but you know what they say.......there is no replacement for displacement! Unless you go with an internally balanced crank (which you can also do on a 406,I did) you will have to buy a new balancer and flexplate anyways, so its not like you will save any money there by using your old stuff.

I'd do a 400+ cid only if I would use an aftermarket block and the added cost would ad another year to the buildup. The only added machine work would be clearance required for the rotating assembly which I am going to do myself.
I played with Dyno2000 and found that the larger displacement motors did not gain much in terms of HP but they gained in TQ, I figured ~530 would already be to much and could not justify the added $3000 cost of an aftermarket block.
If when the motor is done I’m still not satisfied I could still build a 427...454 short block. I think my radial tires will hate me with the 383.
BTW how many blocks did you check before finding a useable 400?

Ummmmm, isn't more torque the main goal here?

With that motor, more than your radials will hate you! If you plan on driving it hard, and I know you will, your entire drivetrain will hate you!

I went through way too many 400 blocks than I care to remember to find a good, virgin block to work from!

I'm going for HP at 6500+rpm and TQ over 500. I want to hear that sb scream. If Torque was the main goal I'd use a smaller cc head RV cam and 600carb that should get big TQ# @ low rpm but I won't be going anywhere.

Currently a TH400 and in the future a 4L80E, Trans will be ok. Rear end should be able to live as long as I don't use slicks.
