Any home theater fans here? I have something you might be interested in....
I am in the process of building my dedicated home theater room in my basement, and I am selling off some of my old equipment that will not be used in the new home theater, starting with my old LCR speakers. (LCR stands for front left, front center, and front right).
What I am selling are a pair of Speakercraft 8.5mt's, and a single 8.8mt. I was using the 8.5mt's for L&R, and the 8.8mt for the C. These are VERY high end speakers that are VERY expensive new. (try $2500 CAN new for the set of three!) These are in wall speakers that will fit in a standard stud space, I had them on each side and above my old plasma screen. They are about 2 years old, they are very nice speakers. They feature selectable bass, mid, and treble controls, and the mid and tweeter are mounted in a pod that pivots in any direction to create the proper imaging in any room.
I thought I would see if anyone here would be interested in them before they go on Ebay.
A pic of the 8.8mt:

I will sell them for $1000 CAN to anyone interested.
Bruce, I ended up going with the Bose Acoustimass speakers in both the Family room and Basement with the only difference being colour and the powered subwoofer in the basement. I'm very happy with the sound but would be interested in listening to your system one day. As for Plasma, the price has come down so much in the last few years that it has finally become affordable in my opinion.
By the way, I think Les's offer can't be beat.

When the room is finished and tuned, I will have a couple of movie nights for the guys. My new speakers alone cost as much as a new compact car! I am putting in a 7.2 surround system with 2700 rms watts of amplification. It's gonna kick some serious azz!!!

LCD has come a long way, but it still has flaws. DLP is better than LCD, but it too has some flaws (except 3 chip DLP's, but those are the kind used in theaters). Plasmas are very good tv's, but they are big $$$ in the larger sizes. Consider this: the most expensive projectors available are still 3 gun CRT's. Some videophiles will compare CRT to LCD/DLP/Plasma the same way audiophiles will compare tube amps to transistor amps and records to cds. The analog devices and media will always sound and look warmer and deeper than their digital counterparts. Also consider this: your eyes and ears are analog and not digital!
All that being said, I am replacing my 42" plasma with a 72" DLP.
What are you doing or have you done to the room in terms of soundproofing?
The walls are double 5/8" drywall with Roxul sound insulation in them, the ceiling is single 5/8" drywall hung on resilient furring channel with Roxul sound insulation above it. The floor is 5/8" tongue & groove plywood on top of a polyethylene moisture barrier raised 1/4" on cleats to allow air and water flow. To truly build a sound proof room, you basically have to build a room within a room. I am just trying to keep the noise levels down a few degrees.
how many movies are 7.1? i have trouble finding 6.1 ....
Not many at this point,if any exist at all, but when BlueRay and HD dvds come out, expect the number to grow. Right now 7.1 is basically 6.1 with two rear surrounds instead of 1.
Finding Nemo, Minority Report, Pirates of the Caribbean, and all three of the Lord of the Rings movies offer Dolby Digital EX. However, out of that list, only the two most recent Lord of the Rings movies offer DTS-ES as well. Basically, a lot of newer movies, especially the blockbuster adventures, will have 6.1 in some form.
The Eagles "When Hell Freezes Over" dvd is most excellent in DTS 6.1
I currently have a SONY XBR 50" Plasma. Just right.
I don't agree that the LCD's are better than the Plasma's. LCD's are still in the 42" size and NOT larger yet.
I also don't think that the bigger the picture the better the show...!
Crystal clear pics at 50" or larger are the way to go.

btw sound is a big factor too. Be sure to do surround sound with good speakers (2 front, 1 centre, 2-rear setup,1-woofer/bass)
What brand of 72 are you going with. The only one that rings a bell for me in 72 is the JVC. I've got a 62 Toshiba DLP. When I first got it I thought it overpowered the room, now I wish I got a bigger one.
Sound is by Paradigm Studio 20 series speakers, and powered by a Yamah 1500 receiver. I think the Yamaha is the weakest link in the system. This may have to change.
What speakers are you going with.
You are quite right about Hell Freezes Over. The new Farewell Tour is in DTS as well, sounds just as good.
samsung has an 82" coming out..not sure if it is lcd or dlp though
what are your thoughts on projecters with a screen?
Samsung had a 102" PLasma at the 2005 CES show, but it is only a concept at this point. They are coming out with an 80" Plasma, it will cost around $80,000 US.
A high end front projector with a screen is the way to go if you have the money and space for it. All those ~$2000 projectors you see for sale are okay, but not worth the money in my opinion. Once you have seen the picture a high end front projector produces, you can't be happy with a low end unit. Decent entry level projectors are in the $5000 to $10,000 range, like an InFocus unit, and a top of the line Runco will cost you $250,000 US. My cousin's husband has a Runco, and I am extremely jealous of it!!!! It is awe-inspiring with a 110" picture.
My speaker set is all Klipsch, starting with he RF-7 system, a second powered sub, and RCW-5 in ceilings for the middle surrounds:
I am going with the 72" Toshiba 72MX195 tenatively, it is the only thing I haven't bought yet, I will wait until the last minute in case something better comes along.
My amp and dvd player are both Pioneer Elite units:

Your absolutely right Bruce when you say "if you have the space for it". A 72" Widescreen or a 60" regular which is about the same, you would need to be about 15 feet away from your screen to truly enjoy it. Now when your talking about a 110" screen, whether it's widescreen or not you got to have one heck of a room to really reap it's potential both picture and sound wise.
When it's all together Bruce, the party is at your place, and don't worry about the invites, les will take care of that. He gives you a running update every evening as to who he's invited.

You may want to test drive a Rotel and/or Arcam system, I currently have a Rotel Surround system, and an Arcam DVD player ... and they are amazing!
I already own the Pioneer Elite equipment, and I listened to Rotel amps,Krell processors, and Definitive Technologies speakers during my equipment auditions, to name a few, but I kept going back to the Pioneer Elite and Klipsch equipment every time. Audio and video is such a subjective thing, what sounds or looks good to one person, may be crap in another person's opinion! In the end, you have to go with what pleases your eyes and ears, not to mention your wallet!
