I was just thinking that if my car isn't ready for Lars day, should I ask my mechanic for the money for his (Lars) flight to be taken off my bill?

I don't know all the circumstances surrounding your verbal or written aggreement, but I wouldn't be to concered since I'm sure someone would probably take your place re Lars. Did you mention the importance to your mechanic as to why your car needs to be completed on time?

Just out of curiousity, is this related to the Larsfest happening North of Toronto since I didn't see your name posted?

Not that it's any of my business......Just curious.
