Default Break in period - 1500 mile road trip - yay or nay?

It has been a couple of years since release, lots of deliveries, lots of different experiences.

What say you about embarking on a ~1500 mile road trip immediately after taking delivery of the car? Gentle driving, frequent gear/RPM changes, steady vehicle speed for protracted periods.

Acceptable? Or unforgivable breach of break in protocol?

Sounds like a perfect way to break it in, I say go for it!

@John , I believe a member here and a member of the "other" corvette forum took R8C delivery and drove back from the museum to the PNW (Oregon or Washington State, I believe?) via a stopover in Southern California and reported a wonderful, problem free trip. I plan on taking R8C delivery in June/July timeframe of my Z06 w/Z07 option back to DFW (exactly like I did with my current C8). I would take it and break it in as you described, without hesitation!

I would recommend Paint Protection Film and the front radiator grill guards before you go on the trip. I did a 2,000 mile road trip with other Corvettes shortly after taking delivery. I had PPF which protected the paint, but the front radiators got dinged up pretty bad.

I was planning to use temporary race wrap. Not sure how long it will take me to put it on.

M/e and my buddy picked up my zo6 at the museum and drove 3,000 + miles back to San Diego. Great way to break in the car and what an adventure! Do it!

Keep in mind that what you are doing besides miles and rpm is heat cycles. Gradually allow it to get hotter and hotter between cool down.

I would say vary the speed a bit, and you should be good to go. With my first C8 I drove it from Northern to Southern California. I ran it in different gears and speeds. You want to run the rear axle at different speeds, too, not just the engine, and give it some gentle acceleration and deceleration cycles. It broke in perfectly.

It will love you for it. Relax, it is a car, it is meant to be driven. It has no idea what you are doing or where you are doing it.

I did a 2000 mile road trip home from NCM when I took delivery of my 23 Stingray, and I would absolutely have done the same with the Z06 except deliver was at the end of December (not the time to be road tripping back to Omaha). It's a great way to get both the 500 mile and 1500 mile break-in periods done. I have about 650 miles on my Z now, and I'm about to do a 1000 mile road trip to see some friends and go see the eclipse, and I'm taking the Z so I can get enough miles on it to be ready for a track weekend in May. As you mentioned, the first 500 miles be relatively gentle (although you don't have to baby it, 500 mile break-in limit is 6500rpm on the Z), and vary rpms a lot. I drive 100% in manual mode (except max accell runs) and did this on my Stingray as well, so it was never an issue for me. After 500 you can open it up, just no track use.

Road trips are a perfect way to break in the car as long as you follow the procedure. I did this on my z after taking delivery from the museum and driving it back to Texas. Put nearly 1000 miles on it in 2 days and following the procedures to a T. I have 3000 miles on it now and she's been perfect!

Me and my buddy took about an hour to put on track wrap at the museum after delivery. It worked great and was easy to take off when I got home 1000 miles later. Not a scratch or nick anywhere. Have fun with it!

Just don’t use the cruise control during the first 500 miles, and enjoy the ride!

I had opportunity to buy Porsche GT3 in Canada and drive it down to LA, I decided to not do it, biggest regret ever. I planned out like 1800 mile trip, 5-6 days, epic roads and destinations, rivers, lakes. So yes, DO IT PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

Buy track wrap roll on Amazon, use it to protect key areas and go

I brought mine home from MM and racked up 500 miles easily. I did the first half on backroads which naturally forced me to vary the speed and rpms. Stop for coffee. Stop for lunch. The last part of the journey was highway and I would vary the speed and do frequent downshifts to run the rpms across the full range. I also made a couple stops at rest stations. After passing 500 miles the tach changes and I let her rip.

Sounds encouraging.

It was never clear from the GM videos if vehicle speed variation was relevant, or just engine speed.

New engine, new tech, high power, reports of issues - I want to maximize the chances of worry-free long-term ownership.
