The most impressive thing about the 296’s sub seven lap is its lack of over the top aero to achieve it, and this isn’t even the track focused version of the car (although it does have the stiffer/lighter AF package), the Pista version of the 296 is yet to come. All other variables aside, one has to admire Ferrari’s ability to deliver such incredible all around performance in a car that looks elegant on the street without massive spoilers, splitters, dive planes, etc.

You had better well believe that the drive was sanctioned and approved by Ferrari or it would not have been carried out. Ferrari may not have 'hired' him in the strictest sense but they approved him to make the attempt. Semantics. He's a professional driver.

Very discreet active aero. It has a rear spoiler that deploys at speed from between the taillights. It produces 800lbs of downforce at 160mph. The front splitter also has a little opening to create a channel of high pressure air that mixes with the low pressure flowing under the car to create vortices that serve to 'suck' the car to the road. Lots of little aero tricks very slickly integrated.
Z06 with Z07 pack is quoted as 734lbs of downforce at 186mph so clearly the smoothly styled GTB manages to outperform its zany Batman wing and front dive planes all the same. Impressive.

Do the guys who view Ring times as gospel ever consider the smorgassboard of variables that come into play here.
Track temperature, Tires, ambient temperature, relative humidity, driver ability, undiscovered cheating, and many more all can have a huge influence on these published times that some guys fist pound about.

The shame of it is, I'm left wondering how incredible the car might be with, I don't know, perhaps a high-revving, naturally aspirated flat-plane crank V8? I imagine the weight would be down to sub-3400 pounds or so then. Ditching the battery, electric motor and all the turbo bits would shed a lot of mass. Maybe they could license the LT6 from GM and build a limited run?

For those complaining about Ferrari reporting "dry weight", Chevy did this with the C8z, reporting the dry weight at 3434#, try weighing one ready to drive on the street within 200# of that.

Right. The C8 ain't bad in the same way the cute blonde that works the checkout at the local supermarket ain't bad. After confirming her age and consuming a six-pack, you might. But the 296 is a supermodel in comparison. Different league altogether. Even entertaining the notion that the Corvette is aesthetically superior is like saying the food is better at Chik-fil-a than at Nobu.

Both great choices and not as far apart as the previous poster suggests.
even though many of us have the money to spend ten times over for a beautiful 296 spider im not spending the coin for a 296.
at four hundred grand daily driving one of those would be a nightmare as would having a stable of cars to pick and choose each day.
awesome to hear the 296 is such a beast on the “ring” that said 400 grand is a little over the top.
jmo driving a z06 daily makes more sense and probably delivers more enjoyment than selectively driving a 296 on rare occasions .
no matter what the “ring times” might be.
awesome for those who decide on a 296 of course.

^^This guy eats at Chik-fil-a if you know what I'm sayin'. While I can certainly see the differences between that watch and a Timex, I kind of see his point. Let's leave the douchy watch and steering wheel photos to the Porsche forums please. This is a car forum, not Pintrest for dudes.

My 28 year old kinetic Seiko keeps accurate time +- 15 seconds /month. The Grand-Seiko Spring Drive is just as accurate masterpiece. They don't have the prestige of a Rolex or Patek, but neither does the Vette when compared to a Ferrari.

As a 64 year old I learned along time ago to concentrate on what impresses me as opposed to others.
the smile on my face is all I need or want.
others compliments are nice yet what makes me happy and enjoying as much of life matters more.
for those who prefer to add more value to impress others god bless you as well.
