C8 Z06 vs ZLE; C8 Z06 vs C7 ZR1 @ Road Atlanta - Racing for ALS charity event!
Hello all,
My friend Jay (Steelankles) asked to put a GoPro on the back of my Z06 so he could capture some video of his car and pull some cool pics. Thought this video came out pretty cool and really shows off the acceleration and sounds of the flat plane motor.

I don't have a lot of experience at RA, this might be my 3rd time at this track. I was able to get to 160 mph on the back stretch and ran a PB of 1:35.04 - captured on my Garmin. I didn't set up my PDR to capture lap times correctly. Jay ran a PB of 1:33.5x for reference. You can see where I need to improve - Turn 1, 5, 11 and 12.
This was an HPDE in support of Racing for ALS. We raised over $72k at this event - doubling last year's efforts.
Hope you enjoy the video and please subscribe to Jay's channel if you like to see track content.
Next event is Dave's Race at VIR on June 30th / July 1st with #RacingforALS.
Please consider donating to my fund raising page. I was the top fundraiser for the advanced group and appreciate any support.

Thanks for sharing! Cool video and great to see the car in track. Can you share a bit on how it did with brakes, oil temp, tires etc? I saw on the fb post that you were running slicks? 20/21? What was the experience like relative to your previous car at RA?
hungry for real life track feedback 😂

I have the stock steel brakes, running Motul 660. Plan to swap to Castrol SRF next amd working on getting Girodisc rotors and pads from KNS before the next event.
I have done approximately 20 sessions total and it's time for new front pads. Running 19/19 Forgelines on 295/345 Hoosiers.
The last time I was at Road Atlanta was 2 years ago in a Viper GTC. Don't recall what I ran back then but it was probably in the 1:4x range.
As far as oil and trans temps, after running for 15 to 20 minutes at 80 degrees ambient, the temps never went above 217/209 respectively. Really happy with the cooling and the stock brake performance. The only time I felt like they were not adequate was when they were worn down and needed replaced.
I'll have some better data next month when I go back to VIR as that is my home track. Hoping to eclipse my best time that I set last year in a 991.1 GT3 (1:59.12) and a 2:00.xx in a stock ZLE.

What pads are you thinking? What’s Ken recommending?

regarding the wheels - I am trying to get a combo figured out - glad to know that forgeline 19s work in the rear. Ideally, I would like to get 19x11 and 19x13 and use GY3Rs and be able to drive to track…

I will post up more in the next couple of weeks when I get the new brakes done.
Ride height is stock, went with the recommended track alignment GM recommends.
I would recommend reaching out to Forgeline and see what they recommend. I don't care for GY3Rs for the street but understand the need to have a sticky tire and driving to the track.
that’s awesome! Thanks for sharing! I am too eagerly awaiting your results on VIR vs the gt3 and ZLE (I own and track a ZLE right now).

Cool videos, thanks for sharing, and kudos for the efforts to fight one of the most terrible diseases known to man. I will donate using the link above. Also hope to meet you one day in person, I used to HPDE fairly heavily in the midwest (road America, Mid Ohio, Autobahn CC, NCM motorsports park in my 2016 Z07 7 spd but never made it to VIR as the distance was father than I wanted to trailer the car. I do have a few thousand laps on the simulator at VIR though lol.... I now live in Apex NC near Raleigh and just got the call that I am at order status 3000 with MacMulkin so I hope to have the car in the next two to three months. Doing museum delivery then gonna break the drive up back to NC thru the blue ridge mountains and the 'tail of the dragon' (never done that before either). I hope to get out to VIR for the first time in real life, would be great to go for a ride along with someone knowledgeable like yourself as its your home track, always good to see what line people who know the track best take. It seems like a lot of the lap time is gained or lost up thru the esses and as you crest the hill and head into that right hander... I don't think I have the stones to go thru their at the speed the car can go I am only an intermediate level driver... In any event, thanks for helping with such an awful disease and hope to get to meet you someday...

VIR is only two hours or so from Raleigh
he mentioned VIR is his home track. I currently live in North Carolina near rally in Apex, so I am excited to finally get to do VIR in real life and not just on the simulator lol. As two other nearby tracks, I would also be interested in the OP’s answer to that question.

Road Atlanta is 4.5 hours from Greensboro, NC FWIW.

Carolina Motorsports Park - 3 hours
NCCAR - 1.2 hours
VIR - 1 hour 15 minutes
Charlotte Motorsports Park - 2 hours 15 minutes
I go to VIR 2 to 3 times per year since it's so close to me. I really like CMP also since it's so forgiving. I have gone to other tracks, but anything over 4-5 hours is tough.

The C8 Z06 appears to be a huge improvement over the C8 Stingray on the back straight at Road Atlanta. I have much experience on Road Atlanta with my C8 Stingray (11000 track miles) and Mercedes AMG GTR (I also race a full prepped raced car in SCCA). I cannot get the C8 Stingray to 160 on the back straight whereas the GTR I go to about 165 on the back straight. With the Stingray I believe I hit on the back straight about 150--but that is pushing it. Thanks for the video of Z06.
