You certainly live up to your reputation. Would you rather have engineers in white coats build your $300,000 vehicle?

Getting back to the OP topic, I am strongly considering it. I’ve never built an engine and I would love to learn more about how an engine works through the build. 4k is a lot but I think I will keep this car for a long time so the experience may be worth it. The last time I did anything remotely mechanical was changing the clutch of my 84 Chevette with my Dad. An amazing experience and learning.

I didn't know this was an option. Sounds awesome and yes I think I will definitely do it.

Definitely will do it. Did the walk the car back in 2015 for my C7 Z51 with my oldest kid, so engine build wasn't an option back then for non-Z06. For my youngest will want to do both, build engine and walk the car.

I built the engine in my 2013 ZR1. It was a great experience! The build line is so very organized. It was a true lesson in mass production that I used to fuel my interest in performance improvement and literally changed my position after starting this path.

Here is a video of my car playing on track at VIR on a Ferrari club day. Don't doubt the reliability of the engine produced with this process, the professional build team guys are never more than 2 steps away and they will not allow anything to be done to less than perfect specification.

Do you think this would delay build? Might be interested but not if it delays build?

As I've written in the past: I did this for the LT4 in my 2017 Z06 and it was a hell of an experience. Specially when the engine first coughed to life. I won't be doing this for the '23 I'm likely to get. Given how early I got in Criswell's deal folder (fall, 2019) I'm likely to be an early MY '23 car. And last I heard, GM isn't planning on starting the EBE immediately with the MY '23 builds. It'll be delayed a bit. I've no idea how long into the '23 builds they'll start the process, but I don't want anything to delay my car's build.

That, and I think I'd rather throw the +$5000 towards other options this time around, like the HTC.

They are still doing the work, through you. Having a hand in building your car is something special to certain types of car fans.

The assembly of these engines is obviously damn near idiot proof if any Joe on the street can have a wrench put in his paw and do the job. Almost laughable.

Nice little 4k contribution to GM and I guess some great talking points for those willing to participate.

DOHC engines, especially without the hydraulic lifters where valve lash adjustment is crucial is a little more complex. When you build your engine, the regular engine builder guides you and instructs you throughout the whole build process. The Z06 engine builders are hand picked from the best guys. And I believe they are UAW members, too.

OK so the valve lash setting would take what, an hour to go over taking it nice and slow.

You sound experienced. What would be the correct ignition timing on a 55 Belair Chevrolet with a 327 engine and a 4 barrel carburetor?

There was no 327 in 1955. We timed our 60s V8 motors with as much advance as they would take with good gas which could be well in excess of what factory called for. Lots of tricks on top of that.

I know, it was a trick question. My cousin, Vinny.
