I probably would do it. My dad and I are car guys and to have our names on the plate would be awesome, especially since we intend on keeping our z06's for life.

$5000 is a bit out of my budget, but the LT6 would be an awesome engine to build!

Do you get to measure, weigh and inspect the components before they are installed? Then if something doesn't look right, you can reject that ..piston, or rod or bearing?

I'm sure you were kidding, but in case others aren't sure: no you do not. The parts/pieces are already pre-selected for you. You're not blueprinting the engine while you're there. You're just hand-assembling it.

Can you manage how insufferable an experience that would be for everyone?

Don't confuse a UAW hack with a professional engine builder.
These union boys and girls are not weighing, measuring, or clearancing, anything, far from it. This is sliding a square peg in a square hole over and over and over again where absolute uniformity is the desired result. A ten year old could do this with minimal instruction and might be better at it as they didn't come home plastered and beat up the old lady last night.

I told my wife I wanted to do this and she said that you have to spit in the engine before you close it back up for good luck. Some sort of tradition and something she did when rebuilding her Packard. I never heard of that. Anybody hear of that before?

I believe the professional engine builders are also UAW members. You're painting a very nasty pictures about blue collar workers. Without them you would not have your dream car. I certainly appreciate their contributions.

There is a little measuring involved with the LT6 valve train. All assembled, torqued, measured and new shims installed. Some GM info was given out about having to disassembly it to install the new shims. I never understood that as other engines allow shim replacements without taking out the cams.

Actually, this program used to cost $5K. For that you get your name attached to your engine and you get an experience of a lifetime. You think nothing to pay $20K extra to a dealer and you get what for it?

Wonder if they would allow a father/son work on the engine? What an amazing way to create some unforgettable memories with you son or daughter. Just the photos alone will be something they will keep for the rest of their lives.

Now if my name was going in sub-type on the builder name plate, that might change my mind. I know...vanity is vanity, but wouldn't it be cool to have your name on the plaque saying you were involved in the build of your car?

No, and with travels, etc., it's over $5,000 for me if I were to have interest in this. Pass.

Well, they do still have engine builders follow one down the line or around the room assembling the engine. If the light doesn't go green on the torque wrench, the engine cannot go to the next scan/station. Pretty mindless assembly work.

I believe someone earlier in the thread said that you can bring a "guest".

It actually hurts to think that this is what builds your $100,000 vehicle.

I agree with you and I’m the same way.
