C8 for track - what do I need?
Hoping for some charitable advise here from the first guys taking the cars to the track in anger. I’m sure the free advice will be expensive :-) 👍
- Safety? What are you guys putting in for roll bar / harness? Or just winging it with a 3 point seat belt?
- Brake pads and fluid. I know it’s not the Z06, but trying to find out what it takes at a 90F Sebring day to empty a tank a gas without brakes going soft. I’m very big on gentle warmups and cool downs to keep the rotors from cracking and I’m OK to spend the money on cooling and bigger brakes, if it’s needed. Looking into ST rotors if they are available in the size needed.
- What track tires are available on the OEM wheels? I dont like R7, I’ve had too much bad luck with them to never try again. Slicks I assume are too much for the brakes, and I’ll take tire life over laptime. I’ve a lot of experience with Michelin Pilot Sport CUP N2 and Dunlops SportMaxx 2.
-Not looking rough make the car faster, just consistent and without overheating anything.
What else do I need to know?

The Z51 kit comes with more radiators, and brake cooling ducts. Always have fresh high dry temperature brake fluid in the system (dry boiling point over 595ºF).

Max Performance summer tires or Ultra High Performance tires (Tire Rack) will give you the information you might desire.
Sticking to OEM wheel widths also save brakes, and enable you to learn the traction envelope at lower danger levels than wider tires and especially slicks.
What else do I need to know?
Pads and rotors are consumable items--just like tires and gasoline.
And once you have learned the proper braking techniques, the brakes tend to last a lot longer.

We didn't track it with the stock fluid so I'm not much help there, we had no issues through running Endless RF650. Stock pads had ~4,000 miles on them and were done after a track day. We swapped over to ST43's for COTA and really liked the result. Popping race seats and building harness mounting in the next couple weeks, doesn't seem to be any finished options out just yet.

Thanks Dane, appreciate it.
Endurance fluid and pads I would do from the start, more cooling available to the fronts? Maybe its not even needed?
What is ST43?
I referred to ST (Surface transforms) that I am familiar with, but I assume there will be ceramic options coming available as well on the Z06.

Definitely flush the fluid - I boiled the stock fluid running a moderate pace with my son as a passenger. I would also do some kind of alignment. The stock alignment is 0.5 deg of camber. At least remove the washers and get 1.6 deg and fix the toe.
Stock pads work surprisingly well but they will wear fast on track. I think you'll get 2 days out of them though. I'm going to move to the AP Racing kit since it looks like I'm going to be tracking this car more than a couple times.
As far as tires are concerned I do not care for the stock tires but they are wearing well. I bought another set of stock wheels and the Goodyear 3R tires in stock sizes. I hope to get them on track next week.
As far as safety equipment I am sticking with stock. I'm not a fan of piecemeal replacing the factory safety system and I've totalled a C7 on track with only stock belts and a Simpson hybrid.

One more thing. Absolutely make sure you add the extra 2 quarts of fluid to the transmission. It's a pain but do it once and leave it in.

What i found with the C8 on track is that it was too soft, yes my car has the Z51 package. Dont get me wrong, the car is incredibly capable but how the car is soft is not confidence inspiring to an amateur like myself.
There is tons of rear end grip but as you enter a turn you have to wait for the rear weight to shift to that outside tire and then you have to let the car sit on that tire... this waiting game makes the car a little unnerving, so i was not as fast as i could have been and was inconsistent.
Some vendors are producing shock packages that address this issue, the car benefits ALOT from some compression adjustment.
Enjoy the car! Its really fun on track and with some investments in key areas I'm confident its going to be amazing!

It's suspected that the C8 can push against the bump stops at maximum cornering. It needs stiffer springs, or stiffer swaybars, or no lowering, or shorter bump stops, or delrin suspension bushings in general.
However, when a car gets off the bump stops it no longer plows when exceeding the cornering limit but can fan-out the rear-end just on too much entrance speed. So there's a driving adjustment to make.
Now stiffer springs and swaybars should be relative to how fast-a-responding car that the driver can handle

Have had it for the last 6 years.
Haha, are you volunteering?
Thanks, not annoying you till I have the car.
Would love Surface Transforms again. Anyone done that?
Any brake cooling kits, front rear?

That would go against normal ceramic brake design where the rotor and pad volume are maybe 25-30% 'larger' to create a similar performance envelope.
So far we are just wearing front pads and getting some judder on the front discs. That will probably change when the slicks and warmer days hit later this year.
