Painted My Engine Cover
After reading up on related posts here, and numerous YouTube videos, I decided to tackle the job of painting my engine cover. After waffling back-and-forth between whether to paint it all red or red with black accents, I decided just to go with all red. I was going to hand paint the logo and bought all of the paint and brushes, but after thinking about what others said that it took 2 1/2 to 3 hours to do that, I thought, rather than test my old, shaky hands, I would just get a nice emblem. I had also seen some with the "Corvette" writing colorized. I found a guy on Etsy that makes custom-made vinyl letter inserts and got them. They are supposed to be able to sustain the engine heat so we will see, but they look very nice. My Corvette is arctic white with the red interior so I wanted a red cover with white lettering. I used a primer, Dupli-Color automotive paint (Metal Specks Retro Red), and a clear coat.

It had adhesive tape on the back. It appears to be pretty strong. I was going to use some JB Weld, and I also saw on a YouTube video that someone said he used some gasket maker compound. I am wary about how the tape will hold up under high temperature, and I still might put a little JB Weld on it.

like the OP, my C8 is arctic white and has red brake calipers from GM. I wanted something that would really pop looking through the glass, and to match the brakes and a very close match is Rustoleom 2x gloss apple red. I used vinyl for the black stripes and then added the carbon fiber insert. Very happy with the results. The rustoleum paint covers well with just two coats, And does not need a clear….very glossy without it. I too used the vinyl inserts for the Corvette letters From eBay. I did clearcoat over them to make sure they don’t go anywhere. The engine plates on either side are also painted with rustoleum silver metallic on the vanes and vinyl pinstriping for the red.
by the way, due to an unfortunate accident, my original engine cover was ruined when it fell six stories off my balcony. So this is one of the ABS replacements that is only about 80 bucks off eBay. If you paint it, it looks absolutely perfect and you couldn’t tell a difference between that and the stock cover in terms of construction. the ABS cover also comes deconstructed, meaning the Corvette metal plates and the emblem are separate , setting it up perfectly if you are going to paint it.
