2024 on lockdown
Real question: what actually functions without a subscription on the 2024? About the only things that I have found that work without a subscription is AM/FM and Bluetooth.
- GPS... needs subscription. Doesn't even do basic functions at all without it.
- Voice commands... needs subscription. Won't do any voice commands without one.
- Held the voice command... didn't work.
- Tried connecting Google on my car... says there is an error and won't log in.

Maybe GM will read this: I was planning to upgrade my 2021 model in 2025 for upgrades in technology. Well, that isn't going to happen with the present state of affairs concerning the OnStar subscription issue!!!!!!!

Yea, I seldom use NAV, and would just use my iPhone if necessary, but still soured on the forced subscription money grab BS.

I use waze on my 2024 and do not miss the nav that was on the car for 30 days.

The subscription is not a good move on GMs part IMO. As said, seems like a money grab.

My 2023 C8 is being replaced by GM with a new 2024 next week. I do use the NAV frequently, and was really amazed that my new $100,000 car will not have a functioning NAV system without a subscription. The one on my 2023 works just fine, so not looking forward to a less functional system. I guess it'll be back to the iPhone for navigation. I understand the economic rationale for this, but it sure is pissing off a lot of new Corvette buyers … myself included.

I guess things will change if enough people refuse to sign up but I’m not optimistic that will happen. Also they are getting the initial fee when sold so making some extra anyway so why change.

It’s not about whether somebody can afford $30 per month. I can afford a colonic, but doesn’t mean I want one

For GM to force a paid subscription for things that are standard on so many other makers vehicles is a plain act of simple greed. If these kinds of tactics continue my '23 will be the last Corvette (and possibly GM) I'll ever buy.

Just to be clear can you use Carplay though the Bluetooth without the Onstar subscription on the 2024? I would not want to have a Nav system and still have to look at or listen to my phone too.

For example, XM Radio requires a subscription. It doesn't stop you from using AM/FM radio if you don't subscribe. GPS is being actively used on my car as is some sort of communication protocol. How do I know? I got text messages saying my tire pressures were low when they were swapping tires out. GPS knows where it is, just refuses to allow it to interact with the touchscreen without a subscription. Maps have been stored onboard car navigation for years with zero overhead. You don't need to show me traffic or the nearest something or another, just show my position and navigate me where I want to go based on the information on the onboard mapping software (like any in car GPS has done for the last two decades). Want updated maps, optimal routes based on current traffic patterns, directions to a 5-star restaurant... sure, that requires a subscription because that is active integration with other systems or you having to maintain a system for the functionality. That requires additional overhead to maintain and should be something that requires a fee.

Using GPS through my phone is fine but it is annoying having all this functionality locked away because of a subscription fee. Most of the locked away functionality has zero overhead for GM meaning it doesn't cost them a dime to enable it. It seems more like they are holding part of the car hostage until they get their fee. Other stuff like emergency response, map updates, traffic condition updates, etc has overhead and that makes total sense why that requires a fee.

There's no reason GM can't do the same, they just don't want to. $$

It’s amazing the nonsense that is shoved in this car. I’d want GM to eliminate all the Nav, Google, etc if it would save some weight or cost or whatever, but it’s worthless nonsense that costs money to be annoyed at.
I already pay for a cell phone, all this other stuff is just nonsense.
JUST SAY NO.

Has anyone looked to see if any navigation apps other than Google Maps and Waze are available to be installed in the car's Google OS? Like Here We Go that doesn't require active data?
