Default Drive With Both Feet?

Does anyone drive using both feet - meaning left foot for brake and right foot for accelerator? I don’t remember when I began doing this, but it has been a long time. I think it gives me faster response times and, therefore, actually makes me a safer driver.

Usually leads to riding the brake. I find a way to get stuck behind a 2 feet driver with constant brake lights. One for me in automatic.

What feet order do you use if it has a clutch?

Left always for clutch, left for braking when not on the clutch and right foot gas/brake when left is busy with the clutch.

Not since I've driven a manual transmission.

Yes, I have been doing it forever. I think it became a habit since I owned many manuals and when I am in an automatic, I inherently want to use both feet anyway. When I jump back in a manual, I use the right foot again for both accelerator and brake pedals, left for clutch like instinct. Kind of like when you jump on a motorcycle, instinct takes hold. When I took a speed driving school in an automatic R8 V10, the instructor actually insisted I use just the right foot. I ignored him and told him I was much more responsive with both feet. After a lap, all was good.

I don't as I would have to train an old dog a new trick. I can't seem to modulate the brake pedal with the same feel as I do with my right foot. My left either isn't giving nearly enough pressure, or I'm bouncing my head off the steering wheel. Just not worth changing at this stage of my life even if in some way it's better.

I've tried it but never got the hang of it. Years ago when I was a mechanic some people would come in with automatics with prematurely worn brakes from resting their left foot on the brake. I could also tell when people were driving around with their brake lights on. So you need to make sure you aren't putting any pressure on the pedal when not using the brakes.

No, right foot only for automatics. Left foot for clutch, and right foot for brake and accelerator (heel/toe) with manual transmission. If I used my left foot for the brake with an auto, I’m sure I would end up dragging the brakes and wearing them out prematurely.

Yeah, same here. I've tried it after seeing people talk about how great it is. But I just can't make it work. After 25+ years of driving with my right foot controlling the gas and brake, my left foot just doesn't have the 'feel' to accurately modulate the pedal. I'm sure with practice I could, but its just not worth it to me.

Safe driving courses by the company I worked for as well as other large companies with fleet vehicles required one foot use for both pedals.

My dad was a 2 foot driver, and that's the way I learned. I always drive using both feet. Much more efficient. No, I don't rest my foot on the brake pedal, use the dead pedal. That's why it's there!

I agree. It’s frustrating on the street when you’re behind a left foot braker that rests his/her foot on the pedal and consequentially is showing you brakes lights 100% of the time.

At the race track it’s another story, left foot braking is the only way to go.

This is the reason they instructed us not to use both feet in driver's education in high school. Words to live by...

I have trained myself to not ride the brake. This is something at first I had to be aware of and then it just becomes instinct.

I do sometimes - goes back to being about 10 years old when I rummaged up $50 bucks to buy an old go-kart from a neighbor that was older than me.

I put about 50k miles on that thing and wore a rut in my parents yard - brake left/gas right.

It seems dangerous to drive with both feet with an automatic, in an emergency situation, it adds confusion and also increases the risk of you pressing the accelerator under heavy braking. It gets worse if your foot slips off the brake.

then again, some people think it’s safer… but they’re wrong.

in an automatic, left foot always on the dead pedal.
