Default Windshield replacment

So I will be in the market for a windshield next spring. Not broken at this point but several larger rock chips right in front of me (of course) and overall sandblasted when the morning sun hits it.

Just wondering if anyone has replaced one yet.

Any quotes from Dealer vs Independent?

I would imagine the dealers have someone like Safelite come out to replace them anyway.

What should I confirm while shopping around as far as HUD and PDR needs? Alignments needed?

Thanks for any info. I searched and did not see anything so this might be good info for all.

i had windshield replaced at dealer because mine was wavy from factory.

they brought in a on-site windshield specialist that does only exotic or high end cars.

A little off topic but does anyone else's windshields seem really pitted? My car has 2800 miles of city driving. Zero rock chips but windshield looks sandblasted like a 150k miles truck.

Dealer will likely just contract it out to someone like Safelite.

I suspect that modern windshields are softer than windshields of yore. The windshield on my 97 Tbird had taken on a sandblasted look after many tens of thousands of miles. I had the windshield replaced because of that. I was astounded that my new windshield also started showing signs of sandblasting after just a few months. I've noticed that the door window glass on my C6 scratches easily.

The dealer will farm it out and, of course, take an extra cut. The main thing is to get in writing that the new glass will be the correct GM branded replacement. All the best.

Safe Lite did mine , they wanted to do it in their shop because of all the trim that needs to be removed
Great install with OEM windshield

Did you pay out of pocket? What was the cost?

Thanks for your feedback.

The windows on my 35-year-old Ferrari, when clean, are so clear that I often check to see if the damned thing is down. So, yes, glass _is_ _definitely_ different today.

Cars show wear more easily today from paint to plastic to glass I believe it is a strategy to sell more cars.

Had my C7 (with HUD) windshield replaced by safelite. Called local GM dealers and they told me they outsource windshield replacement to safelite or similar specialists. Cost a bit over $500 and had to be done at their shop because of all the trim pieces that needed to be removed.

Default Paid In Full

I've had 2 windshields replaced in the last several years. Both from road gravel chips that grew into full width cracks. USAA paid 100% no deductible. I went to Safelite, they called USAA and did the claim reporting for me. Scheduled and done a week later. Most auto policies have a glass rider. In Arizona, we have no fault glass enshrined in state law. Windshield repair is a public safety issue.

Usually when I would get a chip I would just take it to a windshield expert and have them fill each hole for like 40$ a chip. The same place said a windshield replacement would be 1500$ so I think paying 40 per chip works out in the long run.

About 1 1/2 years ago I got a rock chip in the far upper left corner. Safelite did a great job of repairing it. however, as was mentioned, the windshield is getting many sandblast like marks on it. Eventually I will make an insurance claim to have it replaced with OEM. Not there yet, but I plan to keep this car a long time so it is in the cards for the future.

Default Plan B

I had one chip filled by Safelite. Guy told me it was borderline too large/deep, but worth a try. Lasted several years. The other was so close to the top line trim, they couldn't repair it. But same deal, it was a couple of years before it cracked horizontally. So you are right, a fill job is Plan A. Just not always a good plan.

I agree and it never looks perfect. You gotta catch it before it spiderwebs or else its game over. I'll eventually have to get it completely replaced cause rocks are just a thing they dump on the roads here sadly.
