Mega merge - Onstar is reporting your driving history
#241
FYI, this is nothing new. The following is a post from this forum (earlier "C") back in 2009 regarding OnStar tracking and getting your driving information.
"You do realize that you can be tracked by your cell phone as well, right? Also, don't forget EZ Pass. Oh, and by the way, credit cards now have chips in them that register what store you walked into regardless if you bought anything with the card or not. "

Also my credit card doesn't report G forces or acceleration rate to the insurance industry. Using points the credit card saves me money while telematics will probably cost me money.

It makes sense to double-check your app settings to avoid any unwanted tracking. If you're worried this could mess with your insurance, talking to united automobile insurance company customer service could shed some light. They should tell you straight up if these scores affect your rates. Always better to be safe and check these things out.

Yep, this has been fairly well documented on here since the C8 came out. It's easy to turn off (go into the MyChevrolet app and disable), the problem is that GM turned it on by default without clearly telling customers.

2023 C8 of the Year Finalist - Unmodified
I just requested my report....am curious to see what is says.
I am also more than curious if USAA is buying these reports and that is part of the reason that they are damn near doubling rates....while saying it is due to rising cost.
I can smell the lawsuits brewing over this bullshitl....sign me up!!!

MyChevy App & OnStar scam
Just finished reviewing the Chevrolet site promoting all the benefits of the MyChevrolet App. At no point does GM disclose that the MyChevy App ( as of '24with C8 ) ONLY works if you submit to OnStar.
If the MyChevrolet App is a feature of OnStar, then just say so! But don't create and promote this app, then link it to OnStar only to force people into subscriptions in order to use basic App features that every other car manufacturer offers without subscription.
I'm sick of GM leveraging everything they can to force people to OnStar.

I never installed Chevy App, never activated OS. Just don't do it.

Doesn't matter if you install the app or not, they enroll you by default. You have to opt out to turn it off. You can do it through the app or the website: https://experience.gm.com/myaccount/...r-smart-driver

Onstar Smart Driver website link
For those that think not installing the app will keep you from being tracked, it won't. GM enrolls everyone by default, you have to "opt out" to turn it off. You can do this through the MyChevrolet app or through the Onstar website at this link:
https://experience.gm.com/myaccount/...r-smart-driver
You need to use whatever email/account was used when the car was set up by the dealer (typically the personal email address you gave them at some point).

Thanks, I've been looking for something web based (the My Chevrolet app doesn't support my phone). I asked OnStar to turn off Smart Drive a while ago but I wanted a way to verify it was still off. The link asks me to enroll so I'll assume it is turned off.

- See the data your car is capable of collecting with this tool: https://vehicleprivacyreport.com/.
- Check your connected car app, if you use one, to see if you are enrolled in one of these programs.
- Do an online search for “privacy request form” alongside the name of your vehicle’s manufacturer. There should be instructions on how to request information your car company has about you.
- Request your LexisNexis report: https://consumer.risk.lexisnexis.com/consumer
- Request your Verisk report: https://fcra.verisk.com/#/

Yeah, apparently they moved it at some point. When I got my 2023 Stingray, it was a setting in the owner center website, but it's no longer there and instead under the experience site under Data Privacy. Here's what mine looks like. Notice it say "you're opted out":

Mine just asks me to enroll. It might be because I asked them to remove everything other than basic Connected Services.

Opting out of Onstar Smart Driver does not stop the data collection and selling. It just removes you from the discount program for Onstar Insurance and others. There is no way to currently opt out of the data collection.

Thanks for the great reply and summary. I just requested my LexisNexis report through that link. Interestingly, as a CT resident, it also allows me to fully opt out of any sharing of my personal information by LexisNexis. I'd urge others to request the report online, too, because once you put your address in, it will update the page with any opt-out options for your particular state.
