Oy vey - battery died after update
Last Thursday I got notice of an update. I didn’t think anything of it. So I parked the car in the garage and went about my business. I have been getting updates for roughly 2 years so I felt safe. Saturday morning I went out to get coffee. I went to open the door and I got nothing. Oh man! I laid on the floor to unlock the door then reached under to pop the frunk. If you haven’t tried this yet I would suggest trying it.
1) I then hooked the trickle charger for 12 hours. Still nothing.
2) I then tried jumping the car. Siren goes off and lights come on. I let it the jump car idle for a while hoping the C8 would charge. Got in to start and it didn’t turn over.
3) At that point I felt battery was dead and I pulled it and started looking for replacement.
4) Remembered my neighbor had a charger so I said what the heck. I let it charge and all lights showed charge took.
5) Dropped the battery back in and low and behold it started and besides resetting the windows everything seems back to normal. I went for test ride and had that big smile I get when driving the C8.
Well that was my weekend after a dreaded update.

I haven’t had an update yet, but my process will be to plug the car in to the trickle charger and roll the windows down.
what I don’t get is how this is even a thing still.

I haven’t and won’t do any OTAs. If something really needs to be addressed via a software update I’ll have the dealer do it.
Better is the enemy of good. And my 23 has been good thus far.

I've been without my car for over a month since the dealer still has it from when my battery died. It was the second time due to a failed update. GM is investigating it but I kind of want my car.

I will never understand why people start the update then walk away from their cars. Why not sit in the car and wait for the update to complete? If it fails you can then take actions to prevent the car from becoming a brick.
I have had 5 updates on my C8. All were successful and none took even 10 minutes to complete. I sat and watched them and would have been prepared to act if one had failed in a compromising way. It certainly wouldn't have had time to kill the battery.

I just dont ger why folks bother with OTA updates. If the car works when I leave the dealer I dont have any desire to risk any issues caused by OTA updates.
I had my C8 for 19 months and never let it do a single OTA update. Never had a single issue with the car. Looking forward to my next unless I decide to go the custom car route.

I don’t know of any way unless you do the download. Once you download you can review in the “about” section. By then it will to late.

yea same here. after reading about horror stories on the forum, the first thing I did when I first got into my C8 at the NCM for delivery, was disable OTA's and wireless connectivity altogether.
When I get service reminders via the dash, I have them install any updates, locally, as well.
OP, so glad you got it running w/o a dealer visit......

I agree 100% with this. Why risk the major inconvenience of a dead car and the time and trouble it would take to deal with it, by failing to monitor the update process. I’ve had 4 OTA updates on my 2022 HTC, all successful, and all completed in a few minutes. It was worth my time to sit in the car and see the updates through to a successful completion.

For those who have had failed OTA updates while their car was sitting in the garage, have you tested your WiFi access from the garage? Is it possible the updates are failing due to wireless connectivity issues and the car just keeps trying over and over?

That's not possible. I have a wireless access point in my garage. The car would not ask for me to install an update unless it was fully downloaded.

Not to go back and forth. Think about it. If the update fails and the battery dies. The only advantage is that you are sitting in your car and you know that instance instead of the next day. To me you are wasting time. Do you watch the grass grow too? (Sarcasm….relax). It was fun unlocking the door with the key and opening the frunk with the loop under the dash. You assumed I did not enjoy the experience. As Ralphie would say….fudddggggeee.
