Perhaps, I'm in the minority, but I saw the original post of the "design flaw" in a humorous manor. Thus, a number or the responses surprised me. However, it has always been my nature to be aware of light weight things in the car with the top down.

If you raise your phone up to take a picture of that yellow police car you will get a ticket for using your phone while driving! I’m just sayin’. Sam

Of course that's how it was meant! Which is why I did not initially comment.

But .......it may very well be a cost cutting feature. Many cars with cup holders have some sort of built in flexible grip, even if it just a sliver of soft plastic. My Ford F150 has spring loaded grips that will grip the narrowest of paper coffee cups. The C8 has no built in grips of any kind. On the other hand, we might consider ourselves lucky to have cup holders at all, and on top of that we have a nice cover to give the console a more attractive appearance when they are not being used.

My stainless steel coffee mug stays in the cup holders with no problems at all.

Did the PDR get a shot of it?

Maybe ask them to double cup you so it's thicker.

State troopers disguised as taxis. What the hell is this world coming to? The injustice! The unfairness! What's next, troopers driving Freightliner semis with quad turbo setups to catch the more spirited drivers amongst us?

Cop cars should look like cop cars. Anything else borders on entrapment IMO 😆

And next, law enforcement will have to arrest taxi drivers for impersonating a police ossifer.

If a cop wants to arrest me, or take my phone, for photographing him in public, fine by me. I'll make a bunch of money when I sue them in federal court for violating my civil rights. There isn't a single example of cops winning that kind of suit.

Depending on the state law he could give you a ticket for holding your phone while driving.

That would be a better solution.

My empty water bottle was floating all over the cup holder on my way home from work yesterday. I put the cap on and threw it on the floor, solved.

Can you imagine a design requirement spec stating "shall not create lift in the cupholder area" ?
