Default Early 2022 VIN shipped to proving ground.

Looking at a 2022 1LT coupe for sale, VIN 0066. Sticker shows as delivered to:

GENERAL MOTORS LLC
3300 GM ROAD BLDG 12 MC 483-312-00
MILFORD, MI 48380-3727

I've been told it's never been titled, Driven by little old GM execs as a demo. ~5k miles. Looks really clean. Thoughts, insights appreciated.

I wouldn't ever believe someone that told me "little old gm execs" drove it.

Chances are it went between employees for awhile. I would value it like any other ex-rental vehicle.

Yes could have even been a Ron Fellows car.
I would assume it’s had the crap beaten out of it.

Ask for proof of ownership - or in this case where the car has been. Go from there - still a used car IMO.

Yeah, another used car and likely one that was USED! But, it should have had good warranty and service work as needed.

Yeah, you hear demo, and you fear the worst that's for sure. Specially a first 100 of the model year car, delivered, not to a dealer, but to a GM proving ground in Mich. Odd thing is it's sitting at a Chevy dealer in Louisiana. Appears to be very clean, but definitely something I'd want to check out in person. Being over 1500 miles away, that's not feasible. They want a fortune for it, so I'm back to waiting on an allocation. Even with a guesstimated ~5% increase to the 2024s, a new coupe, or even an HTC will be cheaper, new and spec'd out exactly how I want, except the color. Maybe wrap it.

I happened to be at the dealer when a friend's 21 was delivered by Jack Cooper. The driver said he was returning to Arlington, TX GM plant to pick up a Escalade to take to the GM proving ground. It was for Mary Bara. People at the proving ground were to "prepare" the vehicle for her. Driver said he had delivered several various vehicles to them. So it is not uncommon it seems for executives' cars to be delivered there. Just have to have a look over on this car to make sure it's ok.

Maintenance will be by the book and the original factory warranty won't begin until titled. I can think of worse used vehicles to buy! I wouldn't hesitate if it's truly exactly what you want and appears to be in good condition.

With that VIN and ship to location, good chance that it was a Captured Test Fleet vehicle. I have friends at GM that are assigned CTF cars (one of them has a CT4-V Blackwing right now, drool).

How it is driven is dependent, obviously, on who it is assigned to. They are also supposed to document issues and submit updates. One of my close friends was meticulous at feedback. For example, one time we were on a road trip and he found typos in the owners manual and included that on his report. Another time the stitching on the seat was poor and based on the feedback the supplier went out to the Proving Ground and replaced the seat (retrieving the original seat to figure out when it was built to check build processes). A third time he detected a driveline imbalance and the prop shaft was removed and rebalanced. This type of stuff is exactly why they have CTF cars. Funny thing is that he is a championship level time trials driver as a hobby but really conservative driving on the streets, even his assigned cars.

Another note . . . CTF cars are typically assigned to a single driver for the duration of the time period. That said, they do get "traded". Another acquaintance always tried to get pickups as his CTF vehicles not only because could always use a pickup but also because he would be asked to trade for an occasional weekend as his fellow engineers (CTF are usually assigned to those in engineering roles level 8 or higher) might need a pickup for a weekend to move a kid to school, pickup mulch, etc. This way he could pick and choose what he traded for.

BTW, a reason why it is at a dealership in Louisiana could be that sales districts/dealerships can be awarded CTFs on top of their allocation. Or, additionally, some CTF cars go through auction. Before I bought my ‘20, I was offered a CTF from my dealer, they were getting two of them, on top of their allocation because of their sales volume and also as a “thanks” because they allowed their dealership to be used for C8 corporate sales training. I stuck with my order because I knew it would be an early build and I wanted the car exactly as I had ordered.

In brief, I would not hesitate on a CTF if it was what I wanted, priced fairly (that’s up to the dealer), and passed my inspection.

Why this one given its uncertainty? Is it selling far below fair market price? If not RUN AWAY!

Check the rev counter and hours on the engine; algebra will tell you how this engine lived.

I appreciate the responses. As far as why this car given the questions around it, frankly any used car may have been thrashed, not broken in well etc. There does seem to be an argument that this might be as well kept/maintained as any used C8 out there. It's got a couple of big things going for it. It's the color I want, a color no longer available. My budget pretty much requires it to be a 1LT. I found 3 caffeine 1LT C8s for sale anywhere in the country. One was an HTC in Vegas that was gone the next day. One looked a little too used for a 21, and this one. It's available now. I live in upstate NY. I'm likely looking at an Aug or Sept allocation for a new C8, meaning I'd probably get it around the same time it would need to be put away for the winter. The price appears to be pretty much the same as most of the used 22s for sale.(read ... too much). But again, it's available to buy and drive this year as opposed to next spring. The warranty question is a big one. I would think not being titled, it would start when bought too. Need to get that verified. A lot of logistical questions as far as payment, getting the car home either by shipping or flying down, driving back etc. It's got a couple options I'm ok with. The only things missing that I have on both my orders is the performance exhaust and HTC.

I would get the warranty period verified. I think the miles start at zero and the time starts at purchase date. The question is how is that determined. The dealer should be able to tell you that information, and if you buy it, get it in writing.

Unfortunately I've been told the warranty started when it went into "service" . Not sure why drive train and B2B are different, but got back B2B will expire 8/3/24, drivetrain 8/23/26. Not happy about that part, but It looks like I'm buying it anyway. Flight booked for next week .

Warranties typically start at in-service miles and date. For example, per the Chevy Owner Center, my B2B warranty expires at 36,003 miles or 7/15/24 while the powertrain warranty shows 60,003 or 7/15/26. This lines up with when I actually purchased the car and completed the paperwork, even though I picked the car up 2 weeks and 2 miles later.

Congratulations! I'm sure it's going to be amazing and you will undoubtedly love it! Enjoy the roadtrip home, best way to "break-in" a new [to you] car.

I would not worry about a CTF car, or the B2B warranty. Just make sure & buy the extended GM warranty before the original one runs out. Maybe a bargaining point for the LA dealer, have him include it for you! Don't forget to do a CarFax on it before you leave. Enjoy the drive home, you will love it! Call the NCM for their Corvette insurance. Don't forget your EZPass! See if you can route yourself through Bowling Green KY to visit the National Corvette Museum with your new baby & take a bunch of pictures with the C8 there. Keepers for sure!
