Default Brakes, lots of dust!!

I finallly got my 23! Only waited 11 months and a couple weeks! Anyway, I was only able to drive it a couple days before we started getting snow and the salt came out! I got it washed and covered then put away for the winter. Well, in the 100 miles I drove, my wheels were covered with brake dust! They took quite a bit of cleaning. I had a 2010 ZR1 with chrome wheels which didn't require near the clean up! Are the brakes different on the C8s than earlier models? I've had an 88 and 85 also but never had as much dust to clean up!

You must have a Z51. The standard Stingray has very little if any noticeable brake dust, unlike the Z51 optioned Stingrays which have larger brake pads and rotors, a different brake pad compound and different metalic brake rotors(which are prone to harmless, but to some owners annoying tendency to create surface rust once wet and not driven to dry them off.)

Yes, it’s bad…. Shows up worse on silver wheels and tridents are a pain to clean. Really makes me want a set of MRR FO23’s in Carbon flash.

Ceramic pads. Do some searches on the subject here and you’ll find good solutions.

Yes, your ZR1 had carbon ceramic brakes which dust very little. Your C8 does not have those brakes, and yes they dust a lot.

Agree that the root cause is the brake pad compound. Change out the pads.

Yep, never had and issue with dust in my 2008 C6 Z51, or two prior Z51s. But my early 2014 Z51 was so bad if I didn't clean after 2 or 3 trips to town (50 mile round trip on back roads with many stops and typically aggressive driving) it not only looked bad it was pitting my black wheels. I foolishly waited 6 months before installing low dust pads. Did the same week one for my C7 Grand Sport AND C8 Z51. The C7 and C8 Z51 option is designed for Tracking and pads have to be able to handle the higher temps that will generate. No issue with the Base C7 or C8.

Here is my many step by step pics/long caption PDF on How To Install low dust pads: http://netwelding.com/Ceramic_Pads.pdf

By all means...if brake dust bothers you, change the pads. You can find all the "here's how to make them easier to clean" tips, or you can just eliminate the dust problem once and for all, which is what I did on my C7 and C8. Makes life much easier if you like a spotless car. I went with the Carbotech 1521 on the C7, but with those being a good bit more expensive for the C8, I decided to try Powerstop Z26 on the C8 instead...and I've been happy with both pads on the respective Vettes, both in braking performance and lack of dust.

Changing the pads to low dust ones will solve your issue. Speak with the forum vendors that specialize in brake products - they can give you advice on which pads to use and a quote on the cost.

This is the correct answer. Go with pricey Carbotech 1521 pads, or less expensive Powerstop Z26. Whoever changes the pads, make sure they disconnect the battery before removing the old pads.

This is one of many reasons I didn't want the Z51 pkg. I never hand wash my rims and they always look clean with zero dust. I just use my foam blaster and rinse with my power washer.
This is something you pretty much have to deal with if you option the Z51. Everything has it's pros and cons and you just need to decide what's most important to you. It's like guys who have a Z06 or ZR1 and complain about the fuel mileage.

Me too I am shocked at how easy it is to maintain the wheels on the base cars after always fighting the dust on my prior Z51 cars.

I was never motivated to buy aftermarket pads, I figured GM engineered the Z51 braking system the way they did, I paid for their expertise, why would I go aftermarket if I wanted the full benefit of Z51?

The stock Brembo Z51 pads are high dust track pads. The brake dust helps to reduce the brake temps so I am told.
Put some carbotech 1521 pads on there and you will be happy. Save the stock brembo pads for track days.

Why would you need to disconnect the battery to change out the pads?

Because the brake system could do a self-diagnostic test and push the pistons out on you while you are working on it...could pop them out completely if pads aren't in place. More info from the manual:
