Front plate legislation

Front plate legislation
I ran across some interesting information regarding the required use of front and back plates on vehicles in Alaska. Very recent legislation is changing the rule from front and back required to only back required. It was mostly supported because of the reduced cost of 300K for the the State of Alaska. All law enforcement agencies in Alaska were given the opportunity to object. None did as they all said it would not have any impact regarding the ability for them to do their jobs and puts no one at risk. They also stated that 20 other states do not require a front plate and having contacted states that have recently made the same change, none had negative results to share with the Alaska legislators considering the change. It was also argued that the new vehicles have front mounted sensors, that provisions for front plate may or may not be offered on new vehicles, that mounting them could cause damage to a car with modern safety features. They also looked at the enforcement record of fix it tickets issued for missing front plate. In the last 4 years less than 25 occurrences of citations being issued by the Alaska State Troopers. Why have a law on the books that is not enforced? The law makers even recognized that car people object to detracting from the beauty and style of their vehicle by mounting a useless front plate. One small step for man, one giant step for C8 owners in Alaska!

I haven't run a front plate on my car since I my Honda days as a kid. Texas requires it, but I won't put it one on.
Corvettes are exempt from having a front plate anyways, no one will bother you unless the cop really wants to mess with you.

Good for Alaska. Wish Missouri would follow the same path and do away with our front plate requirement.

When I picked up the C8 plates at the courthouse the lady told me not to worry about not running a front one suggesting that the law would soon be changed here anyway. She said to keep it in the car just in case tho. It's been over a year and 11000+ miles without any contact by the constabulary.
From the front, they don't know if you're from out of state and from the back, they can't see the front. I didn't even let they install that ugly front bracket. If I'm caught and told I have to run it, I plan to use the bent plate method, show them I'm compliant, then take it back off.
As a complete aside............................. I think everyone who lives here writes it as Washington State, but from my little research more properly it's Washington state. I will continue to capitalize both anyway.

Kommiefornia requires a front plate (of course). I haven’t run a front plate on any of my vehicles going back to 1987. Stopped once in 1998 in my then new 911 (993). I wasn’t even stopped because of no front plate….the CHP was a 911 fan and wanted to see the interior as he was looking to trade in his 964. Happened to mention that I didn’t have a front plate and said “looks like the front plate fell off”. I said, “happens every time I start the car”. He chuckled and sent me on my way.

I'm pretty sure Alaska doesn't have many speed cameras and toll road license plate readers, which often rely on front and back plates.

Texas DPS will go out of their way to stop you for no other reason than no front plate. I won't venture outside the Houston metro area without the front plate on. Local LEOs have better things to do. A Stafford cop (cool guy by the way) stopped my 2011 ZR1 after a stop light turned green for NFP. After a pleasant vette conversation, he just wrote me a warning ticket. I think he either wanted to see the ZR1 more closely or he needed one more public contact before his shift ended. As he left the parking lot where I had stopped for him, he left the parking lot and watched another white C6 corvette go by with NFP and he did not stop that car in clear sight of having NFP. LOL

I am a big fan of not giving law enforcement a reason to interrupt my activities. If you get pulled over for no front plate, it's not because of that. It is because you have given them a free pass to interrogate you. Recent law enforcement action in Anchorage was reported in the news. That task force stopped and arrested people in three separate vehicles who were initially stopped for "tinted window concern"

The front factory plate bracket is easy to put on and take off with no damage. As another said, it is an open invitation to be stopped if you don't have a required front plate and not worth the potential ramifications. Plus in WA state it is over $100 fine each time. To me it doesn't detract from the car anyway.

It's especially stupid because pickup trucks aren't required to have a rear plate, despite the fact most of them never tow anything.

What I did before it was legal to not have a front plate is put the front plate somewhere in the car and tell the officer I was waiting for a new front mount bracket. This has worked pretty much since I started driving cars with 0 tickets.

In California you can get a no front plate ticket while parked on the street from the meter maid. No discussion, just get back to your car and find a ticket on it.
I got back to my car once and had a ticket for a cracked windshield.
Tesla people like to run without front plates. I saw a discussion where some were getting ticketed at supercharger stations.

NASCAR recently took strong action to penalize a race team who were caught in rules violation for tape installed under the wrap as an illegal aero advantage. Be sure and remove your front plate while performing your track alignment and bolting on the carbon wheels and slicks😃 it would be a damn shame if that front plate impacted your hero lap time!

Car clubs in Texas have tried over and over again over the past 20 years to get our laws changed but either police groups or lobbyists defeat the changes before it ever gets out of the Legislature to the Governor's desk.

Front plate required in Oregon, but I never have put one on any of my Corvettes. Drove by a cop in my C5 and got pulled over for speeding, he never mentioned it. Got a photo radar ticket in a C6, went to court, they showed a front picture with no plate, never mentioned it. I keep the spare plate behind the passenger seat in case a cop asks if I have one. So I feel lucky. I do run the front plate on the wife's Toyota, No reason to push your luck.
