Default Loud Exhaust at Start Up

Proud new owner of a 2023 base model LT1 with only one option, the performance exhaust. Beyond pleased with car, and got 31 mpg on a road trip open road. Only have one complaint or maybe its an observation. When I start the car for the first time any day, the exhaust is just short of a roar...enough to wake up the neighborhood. It almost immediately goes down to a quiet idle, but is there something odd about the roar? I am not depressing the accelerator...but my guess is it goes to around 3000 rpm and then quiets down? Am I crazy or is this the way they all sound?

That’s how they all sound and there’s no method of changing it short of modifying your exhaust.

The valves/flaps for the NPP are wide open during the cold start. As the RPMs decrease during the warmup, the valves/flaps start to close again.

It is normal for the exhaust to sound like that. It is loud and if you have neighbors close by, it might be a problem if doing an early morning start-up.

Commonly referred to as a “cold start”.

I keep my garage door down at start up. Neighbors are still speaking to me. Push in your start button, do not press the brake, car will go to accessories, go to drive mode "Weather", then crank the car. Weather mode will take a little off of the intial bark of the exhaust. Give it a try.

Number one worry the neighbors lol. Would hate to do anything to annoy them like starting my car in the morning.

Below is what the 2020 Service Manual has to say about that. There is currently not way to change that in the menu.

Same problem with the C7 Z06: loud bark on initial cold start, especially if it has to crank a bit more than usual. I keep the NPP exhaust set in Sport, which is fairly open and which I like, but I have the same concern about neighbors not liking it (although only one has actually complained). So I usually hit the start button just before opening the garage door. That at least minimizes the initial loud start up but I'll continue to take my chances with the normal loud sound as I drive away. As noted, because I like it. --Bob

My 2022 C8 is loud at cold start, as was my 2019 Ford GT, and I absolutely love it! Both cars get quieter fairly soon after start up, and I do not like that part, but no big deal.

Lol...OP, if the cold start of a stock C8 is described as a "roar" and "enough to wake up the neighborhood" disregard peter pan's response to get and aftermarket exhaust!!

I haven't paid attention to it, but I doubt the car jumps to 3,000 rpm at start-up.

You can put the car on (not started), and then put it in weather mode, and then start it and it will be a tad quieter if you're not trying to wake the neighborhood.

It's glorious, isn't it ?

We did an NCM delivery, and I was standing in front of our car, about 2 feet from the rear of another car that was being delivered at the same time. I had never heard a C8 start. That dude cranked his and I swear I think my heart stopped. Being indoors and standing that close, it was a very special initiation to the cold start.....

If I hadn't known before, I knew right then that me and this car would be friends for a very long time.............

I live in a condo and the garage is right under residential area so I'm also a bit worried how much noise those people in units right above my spot are getting, though I haven't gotten any complains so far. It might be OK if I use my car in the middle of day, but I don't want to make too much noise in early morning or late night. I'm thinking to try this kind of noise absorb foam/mat when I start the engine. Put them right behind exhaust and start the engine. Not sure if that really helps to reduce the noise or not. lol

Too bad, they don't continue to sound like that after startup.

As far as the NPP exhaust valves/flaps, motorized "whatever" reasons given for the beautiful cold start sound - Forget it. That ain't the reason. My exhaust does not have those things and still has the higher RMP and extra loudness for about 30 seconds on a cold start. I asked my mechanic and he said it's caused by the engine timing at startup via the computer. I absolutely love it!

It is stated in the 2020 Service Manual that, for those cars equipped with NPP, those valve are open to provide a more aggressive exhaust note. But, it is also true that the non-NPP cars have that same exhaust bark. Here is a list from the Service Manual of the other items that are also "managed" as part of the cold start strategy, and contribute to the exhaust bark at start up. I included again the statement relevant to the exhaust flow control valves (if equipped) but added the other items.
