Default Dealing with potholes

How do you guys deal with potholes, or more specifically, avoiding them? Typically I know where they are on my drive, but there is always a new one, or just a new area I'm driving in and not familiar with it. I've only driven cars with 15 or 16" rims, so now that I have the C8 in my garage, I'm a bit worried on what I have to do differently now. Some of the roads around here look like a third world country.

I've found paying attention while driving and avoiding them with input from the steering wheel works for me.

Stay aware and look for them 24-7.
Or circle them with fluorescent orange spray paint when no one is looking. That will probably do thousands of people a big favor.

What with GM's history dealing with (or lack of) its customers and bad wheels on most their newer products, y'all be careful where you are driving this thing... Ovoid all but smooth roads from here on out.... or drive a C5!

Stay alert and far back from the car in front of you, also using the Waze app helps when users mark the potholes.

I'm just impressed you've never driven a car with bigger than 16s in 2022.

I have the similar concerns about a Z06. Not potholes but road conditions here in MN seem to be getting worse overall in a lot of areas with big cracks you can't really avoid. I know it's winter and we fix it every spring lol.

Waze, stay out of track mode if potholes are a possibility, situational awareness in case you need to swerve. Sometimes you're just SOL and it cannot be avoided. If potholes avoidance manuevers need some practice, I recommend Chicago or Long Island, Bahamas.

There will always be one you didn't see! Could move to NE SC where I live where we have none from frost freeze!
  • One consolation, Tadge said they increased the specs for the C8 wheels.
  • The C8 are only 11 inches wide rear wheels versus 12 inch rears I had on my 2017 Grand Sport. Note: in 4 years hit a few holes with my C7 GS - zero issues.

Here is a pic I made from my observation showing what Tadge said in words they added to the C8 wheels to increase strength versus the C7:

Note the extra material is on the high stress, hub area. However doesn't help the inside and a few posts mentioned inner wheel was bent!

You got a corvette now, which is low to the ground. Pot holes should not be your only worry, if you hit a pot hole and it bends the rim or destroys the tire you buy a new one. Road debris is my main focus along wit pot holes, possums, Etc. Always leave a 2-3 cars distance in front of your car, if you are following behind someone. Due to the higher clearance of other vehicles they may choose to ride over an object and clear it fine, but the corvette will get damaged from the same object. You have to be aware of what's on the road at all times.

Yes... drive in TOUR mode and keep your tires at 30-32 psi is the best protection for the pot hole full of water.. that's the one you can't see. Visual avoidance is obvious.

Sorry Bird76 but I DON"T recommend you .... drive it like you stole it .... on pot hole riddled roads.. lol...

You are asking the impossible, avoiding all potholes. The only way is to park it. Even on known routes potholes can occur without warning and/or other vehicles can prevent avoiding them if going at allowed speeds. Sorry.

Get the wheel and tire insurance and deal with the damage if / when it happens. That's the best advice I can give and I replaced 4 wheels and 3 tires on my 2019 GrandSport to the tune of over $6k that the insurance company picked up.

Exactly! A key reason I do not take I95 the 20 miles into town! I take a longer backroad route with many turns. There are many 18 wheeler tire treads on I 95. Pick-up trucks and SUV's just go over them. They pop up so quickly difficult to change lanes and avoid. I avoided the Interstate with my two C7's so as not to destroy the aftermarket splitter on my 2014 Z51 and the carbon fiber Stage 2 Aero option splitter on my 2017 Grand Sport. I have a 5VM splitter copy on the C8.

I bought the lift option for my C8 BUT it's only good to ~24 mph! It will not engage beyond that speed. It's also a much more fun drive taking back roads!

The only smart way dealing with potholes is to have your passenger constantly on alert, always looking at the road ahead and never traveling faster than 25mph. Also get wheel and tire insurance. Have a nice day.
