Tail of the dragon at night?
Heard about tail of the dragon, but never considered actually caring enough to do it, but something clicked today. I’m picking my car up at the museum on 12/3, and going straight to Charlotte that night for the ACC championship game the next day. Realized
when I looked at the drive on a map that I won’t be very far from it.
Planning to leave BG around 4:00, so it will be dark by the time I would get to that area. Would it be fun, or with a new C8 still in break-in period, at night, would it not be worth the extra 1-2 hours of driving (would mean getting to Charlotte at like 1AM instead of closer to 11:00)?
Anyone done something similar and have any advice?
Thanks!

You will probably not enjoy it much. For starters, no lights anywhere near the road, and an unfamiliar one, at that
Your headlights can't see around corners, and there are many, so you'll drive slow. Get a hotel and drive in daylight.

I did the Dragon in the rain on the way back from picking my car up. I'd absolutely recommend doing it even at night, but just like driving it in the rain stay within your limits and don't over drive the conditions.
*EDIT*
As mentioned above, grabbing a hotel to hit in first thing in the morning would be ideal so you're able to enjoy the scenery while you're there.

The Hotel SYNC is a great hotel with private garages available in Bowling Green. Near the Dragon, check out Stonebrook Lodge in Bryson City, NC.

Thanks all. It’s either do it on the way to Charlotte that night or not at all. Don’t have the extra 4-5 hours Saturday to do the dragon before I head to Charlotte. Sounds like it’s probably not worth it.

If that's the case, I'd still do it even at night if it's your one shot.

Really?! Lol...apparently never been there, done that!
The Dragon is a challenge even in full daylight. It has become famous for testing your driving and handling skills with speed...within limits...and not a scenic drive, although it is quite scenic!
As another has noted, pitch black at night and with all the blind corners, you'd limp through the Dragon so why go out of your way to even attempt. The Dragon did not claim its fame for nightly, scenic drives.
But....during the dry, daylight hours....Wow, this is where I really learned what my C8 was capable of.

Disagree. In the winter time, before the leaves come back in the spring, one CAN see through most corners. I did TOD in Dec. and it was easy to see through the bends, but it was daylight

I enjoy the night time runs. Less traffic and you can see headlights coming pretty easily. Gotta say I've driven many times though. Just be smart because day or night it can reach out and bite you.

Disagree. In the "Winter time" or any time...... you can't see around corners any better at night than in the daytime..... Which is the point....

I've driven it twice.... both in the daytime.... night? I'd pass.... particularly in that you're new to your car, will have fewer than 200 miles on the brakes and tires..... can't see anything.... do some other roads instead - every car has a learning curve....

In the daylight, is what I am talking about, like when I ran TOD in Dec.
Regardless of season, one can't see around a corner at night, which I said already in post #2

People seem to forget it is a public road that sees traffic 24/7/365... If Grandma Betty can handle it getting home at night in her decade-old Dodge Grand Caravan I think a C8 with LED lighting will be just fine.
Like I said, I did it in the rain and honestly think the adverse weather made it better with less traffic and less temptation to go completely overboard. It gave me the opportunity to actually enjoy the road without thinking I'm some pro racecar driver.

I actually did it a couple of months ago and it was a blast!!! I was at a car event in my C8 north of Atlanta at the Atlanta motor speedway and thankfully someone mentioned it. I’d vote no on the night time drive and it would be iffy being the breakin is not complete. It’s incredible though

I wouldn't do it with a brand new C8 late at night. There's also a chance your C8 can become a contributor to the Tree of Shame.

If you do it at night, just take it easy.
I would probably choose to make the run in daylight hours, but do what you feel is best.
