Default Why is Chevy being so STUPID about its ECU codes?

The modding community does as much to make a car legendary as anything a manufacturer can do ..The GTR put "grocery getter" Nissan on the map as a performance brand because of MODDING .
The Supra put the "king of boring" Toyota on the map as a performance brand because of MODDING
People paid for their C8s they know they are voiding their warranties let them mod their ECUs ...The American car brands owe all their cool points to modding .
Imagine the PR victory for Chevrolet with owners spending 10 to 15k on their cars and able to rip the euro supercars a new one on the track and street
American carmakers used to partner with modders now they are all like APPLE treating people like THEY actually own your car and you are just paying for the right to drive it
Stop trying to play Ferrari and their FXX program and let owners and modders do their thing ... RELEASE THE DAMM CODES

To be fair Toyota deserves zero credit for the mod friendliness of the Supra. That is literally because of BMW.

Your memory is a bit cloudy. When the GTR came out it set the performance car world on its collective ***, LONG before they were modded, that had nothing to do with its performance perception. So if modding is so critical, why does no one care about a GTR today when there are 1000hp modded to the moon units out there? Modding doesn't do anything to the image of a car. I could put an 800 hp engine on an ox cart, wouldn't mean anyone would want to drive it. To answer your question directly, it's a security thing, and that's not going away.

Why don’t you write the open codes for your mass produced automobile and let the after market go wild on performance enhancements?

While I understand the desire to make changes there is a reason the codes are written NOT to be corrupted. The first thing coming to mind is WARRANTY repairs.

GM is not responsible for the codes. It’s an industry wide system.

The lightning fast launches is what I think was
talked about most.
99% of people couldn’t tell the difference between the GTR and an Altima though.
Some just don’t get it.
Behind me in my profile picture is 5k HP, that boat has a max speed of 10kn (8.6MPH).
It’s pretty boring to ‘drive’.
Of course boats and sports cars are apples and oranges, but 😂 numbers aren’t everything.
Styling definitely sells cars, always has.

I believe it's due to enhanced encryption... which is needed because these cars have essentially internet connections... they can talk to homebase and to each other... therefore are susceptible to hacking.
The c7ZR1 HPtuners replaced the computer chip that had unknown encryption... with one that they knew the encryption on.
It appears the C8 is the next evolution of this highly encrypted ECU.

I think he was referring to the old Supras, not the new Zupra

This. I've seen it (hell, I've done it), mod a car that has a warranty, have some sort of failure that would be covered under the warranty had the car not been modded, remove mod and take to dealer, get it repaired for free, reinstall mod.

Because....nobody cares. Only a handful of people want to mod their ECU.

Don't get me wrong, I've been severely modifying engines far beyond anything their designers or manufacturers ever conceived, but in today's world why would GM knowingly, much less intentionally, open the door to everyone and anyone mucking with the 'puter? What's in it for GM, but headaches, when something goes awry and car owners want GM to fix it... that, not to mention the potential liabilities from the Fed?

My guess is that it is 90% feds {Feds want the car to meet emissions for its entire life}
And 10% GM {GM does not want someone driving down the road to be able to disable your vehicle while you are driving it--except when "they" happen to be the police.}

Which really brings to bear the point of "Why should a car be connected to "the internet" " ?

FYI, the GM ECUs keep track of how many times it has been flashed. So if you mod then 1, if you reinstall the original that's 2 if you mod again that's 3. If the mod was done as a GM update and they can verify it was a GM update, you are OK, if not you are SOL, warranty claim will be disallowed (on the engine, not the entire car).

Go back to the Mark Reuss interview that had the answers. People and companies were tuning and destroying engines and claiming warranty. It started with trucks.
