Horrible brake noise, hung caliper?

Nothing to fear brother. It's just a car.
Glad you took care of it that way.
No mechanic mark's inside or out. No 99yo Cruze drivers pinstriping the side...
And the gratification of fixing the issue yourself.

I had the same thing - also right front. My good luck was that it must have picked it up just as I entered the dealership. The service guy noticed the noise right away. Same diagnosis in my case. I guess the right side picks up more crap from the side of the road.

Thanks all for your varying opinions/thoughts on what to do. I decided to pull the wheel only just to get a better look, and it became immediately obvious what the problem is. There was a piece of asphalt rock lodged between the brake shield and rotor. Poked it out with a screwdriver, done. The gouge on the rotor looks worse than it is, I can't even feel it with my fingernail; it's incredibly superficial. I'm going to ascribe to the school of thought described by @19/C7Z and just move on, the rotor is fine for my street use purposes. Just incredibly unlucky I guess!
But now you can drive it until the new rotor arrives! Would have bothered me as we'll. Like in "Dirty Harry," "I's Gots to Know!"

OP this is very common in Porsche’s with carbon brakes and not a big deal.

Now the question is...Is there something with the design where this is prone to happen repeatedly or is it just a fluke and most likely won't happen again?

Sounded like a rock to me. Have to be very hard to gouge the rotor. Glad you found it. I'd make the dealer get a new rotor and pads. Heck they will get paid from GM to do it. With 500 miles GM will probably be happy to do it and pay them for the install.
But now you can drive it until the new rotor arrives!

Congrats on fixing the problem without having to take it to the dealer.

Often the quickest and easiest way to fix this is to back up. If that’s not sufficient a few back and forth will kick out the rock almost all fo the time.
