C8s on dealer lots

C8s on dealer lots
A friend of mine told me that dealers are required order a certain amount of cars for inventory for the lots. Is this true? Would it be possible this year to drive to a dealer and buy a new one off the lot?

It will be really unlikely to see a 2020 Corvette for sale on a lot (especially at MSRP). Depending on the price increase for the 2021 model and how those with current preorders react to the hike, I think you could see new inventory on the lot late fall/early winter at the earliest.

Sure it is possible. It is unlikely that you will find them at a decent price though. Likely the reason the dealer hasn't pre-sold them is because they are asking too much. Though I am sure some dealers are not selling all their allocations up front so that it will drive traffic to their dealership when they have one in the showroom. Just my thoughts on it as there is no way to really know, but I think cars on lots will be a minimum compared to previous years.

Money always talks....how much you willing to spend? How far you willing to travel? Are you willing to pay a huge mark-up on a fully loaded 3LT? If you answered yes to those questions, you will be able to buy off a lot.

I know that the dealer I buy from has all his allocations spoken for this year (over 80) all at MSRP and none are for retail stock. He has a few CTF cars that might be coming so they may end up on the show room floor for about 10K over MSRP. Some cars may also come from people that place orders and then may back out for various reasons. These may end up in the dealer show room as well. It is not unreasonable to expect anything on the showroom floor to be marked up above MSRP for at least the first year.

Your friend does not know what he/she is talking about. Dealers are NOT required to order any number of Corvettes for their inventory. They can if they wish, but they are certainly not required to.
Yes, there will be new C8's on dealers lots. Highly unlikely any will have them at or below MSRP. They will be charging a markup, likely $5000-$10000 or more.

I think you will see something similar to what happened in 2014. On the front end of the delivery cycle you couldn't get your hands on a car. Towards the end of the delivery cycle as the next model year started coming up, you started seeing a few cars pop up on dealer lots. Not sure if that was because of extra allocations that weren't expected or people backing out, but I bought my 2014 a month before the 2015's were coming out and that was the 1st chance I had to purchase a 2014.

Just the Facts
For all the early adopter here, supply is tighter than a well digger's....... But end of the day, there are only so many butts that fit the seat of a sunny Sunday driver at $80-100 grand. A big allotment dealer I just visited with has 75 people on his list that he says will be pushed back to model year 2021. At 40 cars per month, that dealer now needs 40 more orders to fill out his 4th qtr. And 40 more by Jan and 40 more by Feb and...... Same math but less with money. I'd be surprised not to see dealer inventory by spring 2021. If not sooner. Once the rush and flush is over, its back to business as usual for dealers. Hustlin' a buck.

Not only are dealers not required to have stock, GM is prioritizing SOLD orders to end purchasers over dealer stock orders.

MacMulkin still has plenty of allocation left (take that for what it means considering the allocation chopping) so you should be able to walk in and buy one off the floor. Even at MSRP. I highly doubt they will pass by submitting orders so they can remain at #2.

Highly unlikely that a new order at MacMulkin will make it for 2020 MY. Their waiting list exceeds what they will get in March and April allocations by a wide margin. April is said to be the last 2020 MY consensus.

Strange...I was in there a month and a half ago putting down my deposit for the C8Z (#49) in person and was told they still had over a couple hundred allocations available from the salesman that sold me my 17GS.
