Default Dear Randy Pobst

Dear Randy Pobst,

Please, please, please get your hands on the 2020 Corvette Z51 and give us a hot lap review. Your impressions and knowing what you can do with the C8 at Laguna Seca is much more valuable than the subjective opinions of auto journalists.

As someone who will be using the car for track and autox, Randy's $0.02 is worth more than 99% of other reviews, combined.

Be careful what you wish for. May not turn out the way you hope.

(Or Randy will like it. Fingers crossed!)

From what I've read of Randy various opinions, he don't like understeer. MotorTrend originally did not allow Randy Pobst to vote for best driver car and his opinions usually didn't count, although lately he did get to have his votes count. They deem their subjective opinions are more important than track lap times although track lap times do get taken into account.

And how is Randy squeezing every single mili second out of the car in a track going to affect you???

It’s just psychological affirmation. “Randy likes car = my car is great!”

Here's me in my GT3 RS and I lost by a couple tenths in this run. The RS is too expensive to be used extensively on big tracks so the Vette (maybe the Z06) is going to be a top contender for my weapon of choice.

Default OK, Randy the Rocket is one good choice...

He can represent successful drivers in the age group of the average Corvette driver (he’s 62), but he has his own style and preferences. What other drivers would you include in a group of half a dozen at a C8 runoff? You want “objectivity?” Winner gets the car!

What about the Taylor brothers from IMSA? Josef Newgarden from IndyCar? Mario Andretti? Who else?

Randy is an extremely skilled driver. He's also able to articulate the strengths and weaknesses of a car at the limit. When I run autocross, I study a really good driver in a car similar to mine. Sometimes I'll have one of the best drivers take a lap in my car. Their times and techniques become my benchmark for the course. I listen to their advice about alignment and tire pressures. When I practice, I try to emulate their strengths. Through humility and discipline, I gradually improve my times and skills. I'm still not the best, but I've gone from the bottom 20% to the top 20% by studying guys like Randy.

If you intend to drive the car near the limits, Randy is a terrific source of information. If you only plan to rev the engine and polish it with a microfiber diaper, his opinion is irrelevant.

Exactly. I recommend to anyone that wants to get into some road course action to watch Randy's 'The Racing Line' series on MotorTrend's YouTube channel. BTW - Episode 8 is "Understeer - Your Overprotective Mother".

Too expensive to risk balling up, or too expensive to maintain? Get some trackday insurance and let it eat.

Pobst is a racing driver and is genetically incapable of telling the truth unless it is something favorable to one of his sponsors. If you want to ask him something, his email address is usually found at the end of his editorials in Motor Trend, I think it is? He's answered several of my emails. Just tell him you're thinking about starting up a race team with him as the number one driver and you'll get a response.

Did you ever see the video of him driving a 260hp Honda powered Bug around the race track? That was a fun one.

Uh, no we don't. I'm guessing this is a joke/troll as Gordon only knows how to turn left and doesn't use brakes, Force goes straight and doesn't turn or brake, however, the Stig would be worth listening to!

But unlike MT's testers, he's probably smart enough to adjust PTM to track settings, and not take to the track with all the nannies set to max.
