Got some negative feedback from a life long Vette owner
So I put the order in for my first Corvette, a C8 with the Z51 package, 3LT, magnetic ride, lift, carbon flash wheels, and a couple other little addons. I was discussing it with someone that has owned multiple generations of Corvettes though and they were very negative about Chevy and how they roll out a new line.
Essentially they said that I'm going to be kicking myself in the *** next year because they always introduce a Z06 a year after, and the Z06 will smoke the Z51 loaded. He was talking like the depreciation hit is going to be huge, guys will want the Z06 so trade/resale will not be so great for all the money spent, and that I should really wait for a Z06.
I'm 100% with him on me wanting a Z06, I really wish they had one right now as I'd buy one in a heartbeat, but there's not one. I figure even if a Z06 is announced next year it wouldn't even be delivered / driveable in my area until Spring 2021. I don't want to "**** money away", but I'm so hyped about an American mid-engine car and I want to experience this now, not in 2021.
Do you guys think he's right though? Did any of you go through getting a Stingray / Z51 in the C6 or C7 only to regret it when a Z06 was announced and rolled out? Realistically on a build that's over $81k before tax even if I had decided to make the jump to a Z06 would you see first year depreciation being any worse than $10-15k on a loaded Z51?

Forget about depreciation or the fact that there will be more powerful version later there’s nothing you can change about it and enjoy your car.

"life long vette owner" means old guy who is out of touch with reality. Every sports car always has a better option that comes out later. Who cares if you can afford it.
It's your life, do what makes you happy and stop caring about what some guy thinks.

You gotta pay to play. The Z06 may be two, three years out for all we know. Want a c8 now, buy one.

But when the Z06 comes out, the ZR1 is only a year or two away! Well, then when the ZR1 comes out, the C9 is only a little while away!!
I want a Z06 too. The Z51 will depreciate like any other car. When the Z06 comes out, I will trade the Z51 in on a Z06 if it is everything we expect it to be. I still likely get 2 great years in a Z51 and the price of admission is normal depreciation no different than any other car. Or I could just keep waiting for something better and there is ALWAYS something better in the near future.

Plus, demand on the C8 will be so high the first year (or 2), you’ll pretty much be protected on depreciation. The person who wants your C8 in a year will be happy to pay just a little less than MSRP for your perfect, low-mileage car.

Well this someone wants a C8 Z06 bad but probably NOT going to wait 18-24+ months to get one.
Will order C8, 2LT, Z51 and some other goodies like the Lift option.
So if GM is to be believed, 0 to 60MPH in 2.99 seconds or less.
I don't see the Z06 going less than 2.5/2.6 seconds. That is Hypercar territory.
Do YOU drive that FAST?
2.99 to 60MPH is blistering fast. Very few here have ever gone that fast.
99% of C7 ZR1s can't do 2.9 because they have Traction issues. So 99x out of 100 you'll beat a ZR1 to 60MPH and maybe to 80MPH.
Depreciation happens with almost every car on the planet.
Even Porsches and Ferraris depreciate like a bitch. Unless they are a Garage Queen and driven Zero miles.
Enjoy your C8 Z51 with 3LT.

Look at the dealer discount you can get on a brand new loaded C7 ZR1. This is the flagship model, and they’re knocking tens of thousands of dollars off just to unload them. Now look at a loaded 991.2 Porsche GT3 and see what kind of markups dealers are asking and what they’re reselling for privately.
A base C8 will be prone to the same kind of depreciation as any other gen, a mid engine and and internet hype isn’t protecting anyone from depreciation when anyone can pick one up at MSRP or less towards the end of the 2020 model year run.

Tennis, well said.
Its only a number until you actually experience it.
The last time I drove a Corvette was in 2012 (4 days). It was an LS3, A6. GM rated that car at 4.2 seconds. Felt like I was going to eat my teeth. I have no idea what 2.9 produced by these C7 Z06, ZR1 and C8 Z51s feels like. Has to be insanity.
OP, you should forget about what some of these clowns tell you. Buy what you want.

I bought a 2016 Z51. It was plenty fast for me, probably too fast for the road, looked great (once I eliminated the silver front bar and added the Jake skull decal). Got a great year end deal and did not regret it one bit.
YMMV!

4285 people die each day in the USA.
Not one of them said on their deathbeds "Gee, I'm so glad I waited for that new Corvette coming out in two years!"

Provided the 2021 model goes up at least $2,000+ and you parked your 2020 in the Garage with Zero miles you could probably sell it for $5,000 less than you paid.
Just tow it home from the Stealership on a Flatbed and park it in your garage with a California Car Cover.

There's always going to be a more powerful version if you wait longer unless you're in 1974.... Get what you want to enjoy. Personally I think the base performance with the z51 package will exceed most peoples capabilities including my own. I'm getting this because it's the first of something truly new and I'm going to enjoy it. I'm personally not worried about depreciation or the bigger and better. Good luck and your build sounds really great!

I think it’s possible that all bets are off as to what is going to happen with the C8. Corvette was always FE, now it’s not. Will there be a Z06, or a GS, or a ZR1? Who really knows. Maybe the Zora will be the only super hi performance C8 and the Z06 and ZR1 will be no more.
I suspect the ME base/Z51 cars are going to be damn quick any ways. And as a former C6 Z06 owner, I can tell you that 495 HP in a ME car is going to be a LOT of fun. You should just enjoy your new C8 when it comes and see where that leads you.
