What could have been
This shape would have also been really beautiful but for whatever reason, a lot of changes were made to come up with the new C8. This is what it might have looked like. I'm not complaining, mind you but I'm surprised they included this mockup in their video when it didn't make the cut.

Looks like some buttresses by the rear fender.
Overall I prefer the real thing. One thing I'd be really interested in, is what design compromises they had to make for things like the large trunk, or European safety standards.

That car is amazing.
But enter bean counters and engineers and it gets stretched adds a bass mouth nose and voila! Two sets of clubs n no overhestong!
how'd i do? Good?
Compromise.... is what it is.

My guess is the “management” felt it was “too” different and “exotic” for a first ME outing.
Maybe next gen.
Other c8 models looked pretty good to with more exotic rear ends.

Probably an early prototype for the C9 or a C8 that didn't make the cut. Don't see it being a C8 Z06/ZR1 because the body is just way too different and GM wouldn't do that.

I dunno, that clay body doesn't look as if it would hold up in the rain and such.

Looks like they ordered a clay model of the F488 to start with.

Unlike the actual C8, that clay mock up has no Corvette looking DNA in it...

The back one third of the C8 clay model is far, far superior to what they finally did. The smooth, flowing lines are what one expects for a modern mid-engine sports car. What a shame.

I think the two golf bag "requirement" dictated a lot of what ended up being the rear of the C8. I like the C8. But, the no manual killed it for me.

Here's some more shots from that video of additional views of the clay model as well as some interesting pics in the wind tunnel with a different rear spoiler (possibly active aero?!?) instead of the funky wing on the Z51. The artist conceptions on the back wall were also pretty interesting. Lots of ways the C8 could have evolved. I understand the desire to inject a lot of the DNA from previous generations into the new C8, but personally I would have been fine if the design team had created a unique interpretation of a mid engine like the one in the clay model. If they were going ME then just create the best shape possible. Many of the concept MEs from the past didn't look anything like previous Corvettes. As long as it had a Corvette emblem and is called a "Corvette" that would be good by me. JMHO.
Btw, anyone catch that artist conception of a split window version of the C8 on the back wall?
