Like previous generations, I am sure "something" is on the horizon.

GS normally comes out a few years later to boost sales because it gives the look of the higher priced Z06 version at a lesser price. Won’t need to boost sales for at least a couple years.

That’s what I’m waiting for... will make a decision between the Z06 and GS once the dust settles.

The C4 Grand Sport came out in the 12th model year. The C6 GS debuted in the 5th model year. Chevy offered the GS in the C7's 4th year. I'd be surprised if the C8 GS came out any earlier than that, unfortunately. The GS seems to be their way of revitalizing sales as a generation gets long in the tooth.

By that time they will probably figure out and resolve most of the new platform’s issues.
I am okay waiting as I have zero complaints about my C7 grandsport.

I sure hope if they make one it is not just a poser version of the Z06. Make it somewhat unique, don't copy a z06 and then give it less power and capability like the C6 and C7 GSs.

For the C7, the GS gave you all of the Z06 attributes without the sometimes cooling-troubled boosted motor.
To your point, I would rather see the GS be a stripped down, lightweight, track focused monster with the best naturally aspirated engine Chevy can put in it.
However, I won’t hold my breath.

They are offering the Grand Sport's signature fender hash marks on the base Stingray so I don't know if that bodes well for a GS variant. Luckily this is the craziest base model ever, already looks great!

Will definitely consider z06 in C8 version as the engine now won’t affect the visibility over the hood at least and rear engine layout improves the predictability of stronger engine power better.

Its the natural order... base.. z51... GS... Z06... ZR1
Each fits in line from a performance perspective. The GS will perform better than the Z51 and as close to a Z06 as Chevy feels it should.

Myabe with the C8 the GS will have a smaller power bump and the Z06 will have a larger bump. But, again, that just keeps the GS between the Z51 and Z06.

I actually think that will be the case. If the GS comes out in say 5 yrs, the manual may have really been missed. Instead of giving the GS more width, a manual will generate sales and differentiate it from the other variations.

The C8 GS is going to be a tricky pony. Up to the C7, the biggest limit of the car was the platform, that's why from the GS -> Z06 -> ZR1 the improvement in lap times was marginal even if the improvement in HP/Torque was considerable as well the improvements in aero.
The C8 "doesn't" (or at least, it shouldn't have) the same limits given by the FE platform. My guess is that a ~650/700 HP Z06 would give MASSIVE improvements on lap times compared to the NA engine car even if they trickle down every other bit to make a GS.
I can see a GS C8 receiving an upgraded engine too to be really a point in the middle between the Z51 and the Z06... that 495HP is suspiciously too close to 500 to don't have a >500HP version in the future.
C8 <500 (by a hair, but still under)
C8 GS mid 500HP
C8 Z06 600? low 700s?
C8 ZR1 monster hybrid WTF ***** out... 800+ engine + 200 electric. ????
Future is promising.
