Grading the event itself... What a stiff parade

Baffling
In light of the event, that venue choice and time were baffling. They did nothing with the venue, the thing was dry, slow, dull, and the audience was as if they had just rounded up some randoms to come sit through it.
The whole reveal a car on a stage thing is done. Better to simply launch a website with every detail at a certain time. But not if GM does the site. Car and Driver has a far better presentation up than GM.

I think part of the problem was that the teleprompters were so far away from them and there was too much wording on them at the same time. It was obvious that several of them had trouble reading them. If they were closer to the stage and maybe had a sentence at a time it probably would have helped. The couple of shots where they showed the teleprompters made me amazed that they could keep track of where they were in their speech. I would have liked if Mark was less speechy and more off the cuff. I think his best spot was where he was talking about the price. His ad-libbing was more conversational and natural at that spot

Boooooring.
This wasn't for the Corvette enthusiast. It was for the press and public. But that being said, for a reveal of the latest generation and significant engineering change, it was yada, yada, yada, yeda. Turned if off halfway thru the damn thing.

I was expecting AOC to show up and tell us to give up our guns, then Al Gore after that to tell us they are going all electric to save the planet. It was headed in that direction................but they all STFU and the car came out. Thank goodness. As someone mentioned on the live feed, they should of came out, roasted the tires and did a few donuts to a Metallica song or something. But, I get it. They wanted it for the wine sipping crowd.

Theres an old saying in sales that you sell the sizzle and they will buy the steak. These GM execs dont have a clue how that works and never really did. The whole presentation basically failed miserably in terms of building excitement for the most significant corvette EVER!!! He mentions they did ring testing and it would have been wonderful to follow up with perhaps a in car video of them ring testing with full HD and video. Put us in the drivers seat for christ sake!!! I am sure they believe the end product is good enough to sell itself and it very well may be. But you are going have to determine that for your self .
Just imagine for instance if the presentation was done by a a Lee IACOCA type or Carol Shelby . i dont blame the audience, it is the presenters job to build excitement for the product. We all have different skill sets and the recognition of what those are and then actively and effectively using the people that can best convey the message seems to be a very basic attribute that is lacking in these GM execs.
In my opinion the car itself grades out as an A but the presentation was an F..

The GMC truck reveal was much, much better. Maybe it should be since they make a lot more $$$ in trucks. Definitely should have been some tire roasting involved, probably should have been outdoors so they could have driven up in 12 of them in all the colors, all snarling and zipping around like a theme park thrill show.

Wow....I should re-title this thread, the "I have nothing to do but to bash GM at every turn" thread. If you want glitz and glamour, go to Las Vegas. What were you REALLY expecting. It is what it is....it was what it was.....IT'S OVER. Get over it, people. Find something really important to gripe about....some world issue that makes the planet and world better.

A little too much talking in the beginning, middle and end for my taste lol. Kidding of course. The end was the best part. Wish they showed more of the car and gave more info, i.e. price ect. Overall it was ok.

I have to agree the presentation was boring. If you are going to have girl announcers make them Hot. I also did not like how the GM execs had to use a script to talk. Just go up there and talk about the car and some stories about when it was being made...there had to be some.
The corvette c8 does look amazing. I will keep my 2 month old C7 (2018 purchased used) for 5 years and then trade up to a C8...at least that is the plan. One thing I miss about the C8 is I cannot fit my bike into the trunk or frunk...so a decision is there.
Could I have done better - not sure...but given the budget the had I could have hired someone to give me some great ideas and make it better. But does it matter - the C8 will be a hit and hopefully one of the tours will be near me.

Agree, the presentation was awful. That 3rd dude couldn't even read the teleprompter, always clearing his throat and saying "um". I was cringing and just wanting to see the damn car and hear the specs. Way too drawn out for what the point of the reveal was supposed to be.
After the old men stopped talking, it was GREAT!

Nice tie in with the 50th Anniv of the moon landing, but I did not need 10 minutes worth of history on it to start the show with.

Hmm?
Mark Kelly is running for an open U.S. Senate seat (McCain's) in Arizona. Not sure why he is since he has never lived here? So now I have two reasons to not vote for him.

EEverybody is an F in critic until they have to get up and do it...
the reveal was good....and of course we all wanted to see the car and hear the performance and the pricing etc..,
The corvette team deserves their moment of glory in what they created...
the corvette c8 crushes the competition...

For me the home run reveal was the Demon. Dodge brought it out and immediately lined it up for a burnout and pass showing what the car could do.
Then came a brief history of Dodge's racing pedigree then the stats of the car.
Simple and everyone's jaws were on the floor.
Corvette could have done something similar here.
If they wanted to tie in the space/nasa program that is fine. It needed to be cut by 5-7 minutes. Then show the vette making laps on several popular race tracks and post lap times with it.
0-60
1/4 mile time
60-130 times
Then wrap it up with the starting at under 60k!
Mic drop and out.
The best corvette commercial (might have been a chevy commercial) was a few years back and it said something along the lines of "we still build rocket ships" and they showed a ZR1 melting its tires and it raced off the screen. That is the stuff that gets me going and excited about a car.

I thought it was well executed... they went on a little too long about the NASA connection, but the car is astounding. Plus, the live stream worked perfectly on my firestick on my 60".

I thought it was awesome. I dug every minute of it. As Foosh mentioned, you could really feel the pride these folks had for the truly astounding C8.
Just watching it made me feel like a kid at Christmas - just like I felt at the NCM picking up my C7.
But I'm biased, I'm a fan of all things Corvette.

Damn dude, why the hate
Man. Some things never change. Including the stuffed shirt mentality at G.M. They spent a TON of money on that event and it was nothing but an anticlimactic mish-mash of talking heads, stuffed shirts, and cliche after cliche.
First, I don't care what their title is, if they can't talk in a public speaking environment, then they shouldn't. These guys not only couldn't speak, they had all the emotion of a dry fire hydrant. Find people in the organization who can speak dynamically in public, or hire cool actors.
Second, the photography was horrible. Get rid of the extreme close-ups that are nothing but disorienting and prohibit the audience from taking in the car as a whole.
Third, don't retell the same story over and over. We know what the Corvette is. Find some story that brings drama to the telling. There was plenty of behind the scenes drama over the mid engine development. Latch onto that and weave it into the presentation.
Fourth, if you can't drive fast and dynamically in the venue, then don't drive at all. Or do something fun and drive onto a platform in the middle of the audience. ANYTHING but the high-school assembly way they did it.
Fifth, find some human interest. Have one or a group of little people tell some fun stories from driving the mules around the world. Good grief, there's gotta be some great, cool, stuff there.
Finally, GM and Chevrolet and Corvette need to divest themselves of their old school, stuffed-shirt image. And this Lawrence Welk production did not help... It is bizarre they have ZERO self-awareness.

The event was great. I was there,
and everyone around me was stoked. When the 3 cars came racing towards us I was sure it was a computer graphic deal. The size of the hangers made that possible. The only thing that you say that is a tad realistic was the two NASA folks. That whole deal was like letting the air out of the room.
Life is better with a positive attitude.
