Curious about rear-view in light of how the '63 was yanked for just a 3" obstruction
I was a little kid at the time, but I'm old enough to remember seeing new split-window 63's in showrooms and on the road. A Vette was about as high as a working class guy could hope to afford if you were young. The old guys...old was 40 then....aimed for a Caddy.
They looked just as awesome to people back then as that particular model looks now. But because of complaints about that little strip down the center of the back window regarding the way it got in the way when looking in your rear-view mirror, that styling feature was stopped after just one year.
I've never driven one, but for those who have I have to ask: does such a narrow strip really cause that much of a problem? I suppose you could lose a bike in there and that matters, but could you hide a car there?
And the reason I ask this at all is that I'd like to hear from people who are familiar with ME vehicles: are the majority of them constructed such that you can see perfectly well what is behind you when driving? Or is the situation the opposite? I know for sure that on some, you can't see ****. Might the ME Corvette be just as short-lived as the split-window '63 for the same reason? Is a future single-year-production collectible unwittingly being created or will technology save the day as we always hope it will?

C8 has an external rear view camera mounted on the rear hatch. Camera shows in the normal rear view mirror, the same as if you were looking at an old tech rear view reflection!

Back in ‘63 the mirrors were nothing compared to today. Back then you had a smaller inside rear view mirror pared with a small driver’s side mirror. No passenger side mirror. That drivers side mirror would never stay put and was always out of alignment. So having an obstruction for the inside mirror was a real issue, for that time.
Today we have great mirrors all around the car. Plus the C8 will have a rear view camera for the mirror.
Only issue due I see is the over the shoulder view which has been a Corvette issue for years.

Does anyone know if the rear camera mirror setup is able to be adjusted (obviously not a ME question, so I guess on the XT4 and others)? Or do they just point straight back? I learned the trick of adjusting mirrors that has you adjust the outside mirrors first, then adjust the rear view to cover the gap which means it is largely looking to the right rear of the car.

Biggest issue with a rearview camera is that it's too dirty to use when you need it most. I suspect it the C8 rear view camera will have a washer jet to clean it as this is becoming common on high end cars. The Camaro sure doesn't, so it's still a bunker in a storm.
Another potential issue with a rear view camera is the two dimensional image which results in a lack of depth perception relative to a real mirror. Never having had a rear view camera I don't know how much of a problem this is, but it's something to consider.

If you want to see the newest version of the mirror camera, hop in a 2019 Silverado LTZ or High Country or Camaro ZL1. It has the ability to zoom to three levels, tilt and brightness. The first version I think only had zoom and brightness? Expect the Vette to have this one, or maybe an improved on that version.

I do not think the 63 was changed because of complaints or safety. There are complaints about EVERYthing and the government's intrusion into what car makers can do wasn't as strong then. But Zora didn't like it, fought against it, and won by the next year. That was a time when models changed something about appearance every year just to differentiate the year.

Yes. Vans with rear barn doors have the same problem. It only gets worse the closer the strip is to the driver.

I have a split and there are zero issues with visibility with well set mirrors. I have several hours seat time in an Aventador and its rear visibility is similar to my C7 Z06.
On the C8 visibility wont be a problem because of a dirty camera. Us proud waxers will never get the car dirty (or wet)......so that camera will be clear..
