Default 2019 ZR1 Coupe stolen in Naples, FL

My best friend's beautiful 2019 ZR1 Elkhart Lake Blue Coupe (with the low wing) was stolen Sunday morning at around 1:30 am from the garage. The ZR1 was parked and locked in their spot in the covered parking area at a Condo Complex in Siena Lakes, Naples.

My friend woke up Sunday morning around 6 am and found an email from OnStar that the alarm has been triggered. He immediately ran to his parking space and the car was gone. The OnStar notification was sent at 1:32 am when he was asleep.

Cameras on the front gate showed car was leaving at 1:34 am. The thieves disconnected the GPS so OnStar couldn't track it or shut it down. Sheriff Dept. was called and the police came to look and file a report.

We think the ZR1 is already on a ship to somewhere but there is a slight chance that the thieves put it for sale or parts of it - possibly in ebay or online auctions or anywhere else.
The license plate says "VEROOM 1" and the VIN is 1G1Y52D90K5801745.

If anyone sees the car anywhere please contact the Collier County Sheriff Department - and me (the owner is not in member of the CF).

Unfortunately I am not able to post pics (jpg) - it uploads to 90% and stops. Any advice how to do it?

Thanks for sharing and keeping your eyes open
Mandy

How do I avoid theft? I don't live in a city and I don't do community living (condos apartments) 3 acres and private garage with gated driveway. If you can get to my car through the hail of gunfire, attack dogs, locked garage, and get past me, it's yours.

Thanks Deb,
Unfortunately I can not upload any pics here, also not message them. They all only upload until 90% and then stop uploading. Don't know why.
If you can message me your email address I can email them to you.

Wow !
Are the thieves that far advanced where its easy for them to steal the car of their choice ??
Makes me wonder if it was an inside job from a GM dealer employee who would know how to shut off the
car alarm, bypass the GPS and know how to shut down the On-Star and drive away.
Just thinking out loud !!

We are thinking about the same....... it obviously seems to be pretty easy for them, it took them 5 minutes to open it and drive it away

And now your battle with your insurance company just started.

I hope they catch these thieves and add burglary charges as well for stealing it from a private garage.

I live nearby Naples and yes they can steal them that fast. A C7 Grandsport was stolen from a dealer here last week and caught on camera. The theif had their cell phone out and did something that had to do with reprogramming a key fob. Was in and gone within 3 minutes. Then a few days ago another grandsport was stolen just like this ZR1 and both locations are close to the highway and 15-20 minutes from alligator alley to Miami. Im paranoid to leave mine anywhere and when I do I have an airtag in mine just in case. They would probably find that too. I hope the owner had it insured for what it was worth. I would never in a million years leave my ZR1 parked under a carport.

Unfortunately SWFL has been recently hit with an influx of thefts that is commonly seen in California or Texas - one friend had his SS Sedan stolen, another friend his 6th Gen ZL1 and a C7 from his community was also stolen shortly thereafter, etc.

I have LEO friends that have warned me about the car theft rings in town, and from what I am told most of them are commonly pinged headed towards Miami then disappearing.

Same thing happened to my GMC truck. Exactly the same. On star was useless BTW. Even if it didn't happen in the middle of the night OnStar would have done absolutely nothing until the police were present. They wouldn't of shut the car off or given a location.

I was lucky, my truck was just parked in an apartment complex parking lot to "cool off" and a cop rolled through and ran my plate. I had to fix a few things, and they stole my pistol.

I did however hide apple airtags in all my vehicles so it will know exactly where they are if this ever happened again.

Good luck on this, fighting the insurance for a 1:1 replacement value will become a struggle.

Remove the 2 screws that fasten OBD2 port to the bottom of dash and tuck it up inside the lower dash then get a OBD PORT from a junk car and fasten it in place, it will slow the thief down because the scan tool will not communicate with the cars ECM , it might have them go to the next car and leave yours alone , they usually like the path of least resistance .

A hidden switch to disable the injectors is all you need to fool the most sophisticated thieves. However, if the car is out in the open any tow truck could pick your car up...

Keep ur key fobs in a coffee can or a Faraday box. Do not leave them In the vehicles. Lock the doors with the button and not the fob. Thieves pick up the signals and duplicate them, get into the car and steal them. This intell is all over other forums. They will drive around and try to pick up the pings from fobs laying on a counter!
