I have seen accomplished pros hit the pit lane wall leaving the pits on cold tires. Anyone can make a mistake. But I'm glad it wasn't me....

And!? ;)
'Particularly' germane?
Here he is:
We find that the calibration settings that achieve the fastest lap times often result in expert drivers feeling like they are being held back slightly on corner exit. Most of the time that extra little bit of slip that an expert driver wants is over the traction peak of the tire and may feel good but is wasting forward acceleration. The restrictive feeling is not there as a safety net, rather, it’s as close as we can operate to the peak capability of the tire in a robust way.

He had the nannies turned off. Bad idea.
He gave it way too much throttle for the situation and didn't let off.
He took a poor line through the curve.
Basically, he screwed up. Doesn't make him an idiot. We all screw up at times. He just picked a bad time.
Even with my 400 hp C6, I decided to turn off the nannies one time and give it some gas in a corner (5 lanes wide) at low speed. It was startling how much the car spun and how much of a difference after I removed the nannies. I have not even tried it with the LS7. I know what will happen. And the ZR1 has a lot more power than the 427.

Mark was not the "official" pace car driver for the race. He was only in the car, along with a race official, to do a "parade" lap, and then pull into the pits and let the "official" pace car driver actually pace the field, etc.
That is why he is dressed in slacks and a white dress shirt, without any safety gear. He was supposed to only to do a VERY low speed "parade" lap, and not "show off" by "drifting" the car with plenty of smoke to impress the crowd.
We don't know his speed when he started his spin, but it had to be very low, so his correcting the slide by turning the wheels into it(as he did) should have corrected the problem, as he would also modulate the throttle to keep the car under control.
At that low a speed, a "bump" in the pavement should not have upset the car, and he would not have floored the car. just letting off the gas should have stopped the spin immediately, but the power was on full blast until he hit the wall straight on. Absolutely no reason why he would have to give the car more than a slight amount of gas in order to do a "parade" lap.
Things go wrong with cars all the time. We will never know but what if it were a simple equipment malfunction that occurred causing the car to go wide open throttle, etc. That would explain why the car was under full power right up to the time he hit the wall.
Everyone keeps posting as if he were actually "racing" the car and made a stupid driver's mistake and lost control while driving 10/10. He wasn't racing. In fact he was probably driving the car more cautiously than most of us do while playing around on a curvy mountain road.

Not sure what your talking about he took off and got too frisky with the gas, way too fast for a parade lap. He was going way too fast around the curve the track had a dip which he hit while on the brake slower car was in the way he got light in the rear and came out, he lost traction but he was still on the gas. As expected! BOOM!
I could out drive him any day, any time any car! Worst example of driving ever!
Last time he will driving a pace car! All on him!

How would you know he had the nannies off?
I would bet they were on. Too much is being put in the NANNIES!
You cannot overcome the predicament he put himself and the the car in at high speed with "nannies" when his driving skills were not there
I think it would not matter when your driving is that bad your going to wreak. Nannies might have helped but not when you cannot lift the gas he was powering forward straight into the wall no lift on the gas. He was a fish out of water!

With this car when you spin the tires like crazy there are clouds of smoke that you can't see through. Those tires were spinning the speed they would to match the car's original forward motion. It looks the driver knows what he is doing and the stability system or elsd malfunctioned.

That is how it looks when a car slides sideways and the forward motion is slowed by 50% from what it was before the slide. It looks like he was maintaining throttle like is needed to keep the car straight.

Still on the gas? No way of knowing, since we have no gauges, and can't hear the engine.
Sure thing, dude!

I don't think PDR was running but if it was it sure would be interesting to see the data. Glad everyone is ok.

Does the PDR give data for elsd % lock?

I would be extremely embarrassed if I wrecked the Pace Car on a parade lap. This coming from a "nobody"! I could only imagine how embarrassed Mark Reuss feels! Hey, things happen and we all make mistakes.....
